Deloitte Sustainability Consulting Timeline: Climate Tech Developments, Green IT Services Partnerships, M&A and More

Deloitte, the global IT consulting firm, continues to expand its sustainability, climate tech and green IT services for partners and customers.

Among the key executives to know:

  • Kathryn Alsegaf, global chief sustainability officer, is driving the company's overall march toward net zero.
  • Jennifer Steinmann, global sustainability and climate practice leader, oversees the group that assists customers with their net-zero journeys.
  • Marcus Goetz, partner and global sustainability and climate technology marketplace leader.

Within Deloitte's own business, the company by 2030 will strive to:

  • Reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 70% from a 2019 base year.
  • Reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from business travel 50% per FTE from a 2019 base year.
  • Source 100% renewable electricity for the company's buildings.
  • Convert 100% of its fleet to hybrid electric and electric vehicles.

The company also plans to engage with suppliers with the goal of having 67% (by emissions) set science-based targets by 2025. The company also expects to invest in meaningful market solutions for emissions we cannot eliminate.

September 2024 Milestones

  • Employee Training - IT Services: Deloitte has launched Deloitte Academies, a workforce and upskilling-focused suite of immersive learning experiences, focused on high-demand skills areas including sustainability, AI, product innovation and leadership, ESG Today reported.
  • Partnership - IT Services and SaaS: Deloitte has implemented GreenLight powered by Salesforce — a solution that combines Salesforce Net Zero Cloud with Deloitte’s proprietary technology — in more than 120 countries to help meet its sustainability goals.
  • Research: Fully 85% of CxOs say they have increased investments in sustainability in the past year—up from 75% in 2023, a Deloitte survey found.

August 2024 Milestones

  • EV Fleet Management: Autonomy has raised some funds, acquired certain intellectual property (IP), and launched a new business called Autonomy Data Services (ADS). The new focus: Offer SaaS applications that allow customers to manage EV fleets and far more. Deloitte is involved.

  • Partnership - Assessment Tool: Deloitte and DBS Bank co-developed a Sustainability Accelerator Tool designed for small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) customers in Asia.
  • Partnership - Digital Twin Software: Akila and Deloitte have partnered to "offer decarbonization software solutions to the organizations’ shared U.S. customers." The effort is designed for customers that are "looking to reduce carbon emissions, optimize energy consumption, and enhance efficiency related to the operation of buildings," the two companies said.
  • Research - Sustainability Perspectives: Roughly 56% of workers believe their company is advancing human sustainability, versus 82% of the C-suite, Deloitte research found.

  • Partnership - IT Services and ESG Software: Deloitte has expanded its alliances with Informatica and Workiva to "support clients as they build their environmental, social and governance (ESG)  implementation and data management capabilities." The resulting reporting solution can "help clients accelerate ESG deployments and reporting with accurate, verifiable data to align to regulatory requirements empower agility," Deloitte said.

Market Forecast: Sustainability Business Services, Green IT Services

Consulting firms worldwide -- including Deloitte rivals such as AccentureEYKPMG and PwC -- continue to expand their sustainability business practices and associated software development.

Among the reasons: Global spending on sustainability business services will reach $65 billion in 2027, up from $37.7 billion in 2023, according to an IDC market forecast. That's a 14.9% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) during the forecast period, IDC said.

Moreover, the global green IT services market will reach $33.64 billion by 2031, up from $13.72 billion in 2022, according to Astute Analytical. That's a 10.48% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) during the forecast period, the company said.
