Sustainable IT Services News 28 November 2025: Microsoft Energy Executive Joins Nvidia; Green IT Market Growth Forecast; More

Here is today's sustainable IT services news, research and analysis for channel partners, MSPs, climate accounting professionals, consultants and the chief sustainability officers (CSOs) they serve.

A. Sustainable IT Partnerships, Strategic Alliances and Strategies

1. Talent - Data Center Sustainability: Microsoft veteran Sean James has joined Nvidia as a distinguished engineer of energy systems. He previously was senior director of energy and data center research at Microsoft. His career focus seeks to "contribute significantly to the global dialogue on sustainable computing and energy use in the technology sector," according to James' LinkedIn account. 2. Layoffs - Sustainability Leader and Team Members: Swire Group layoffs impacted 10% of employees at its Hong Kong head office, Bloomberg reported. The cuts, made in November 2025, affected some 40 people in divisions including sustainable development, finance and risk management. Some department leaders were laid off, including group head of sustainability Mark Harper, the report said. Related: List of sustainability industry layoffs

3. Executive Update: ESG ratings, data and research provider Morningstar Sustainalytics has named Jodie Tapscott as head of climate and nature solutions. Related: List of sustainability executive moves in November 2025

4. Executive Departures - GM Software: General Motors has now lost three top softtware executives in the past month as the automaker — with its new chief product officer at the helm — combines its disparate technology businesses into one organization, TechCrunch reported. The departures include Apple veterans Baris Cetinok and Dave Richardson, and Google veteran Barak Turovsky, the report said. GM is striving to course correct after the company leaned heavily toward EVs.

5. Research - Carbon Management System Market Growth Forecast: The market for carbon management systems will reach $21.73 billion by 2029, up from $12.7 billion in 2024, according to The Business Research Company (TBRC). That's an 11.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), the researcher said. Carbon management systems allow for real-time carbon emission monitoring from industrial functions, enabling companies to pinpoint where energy usage is inefficient by measuring emissions accurately, the research said.

6. Research - Green IT Market Growth Forecast: The global Green IT market will reach $90.41 billion by 2032, up from $27.98 billion in 2024, according to DataM Intelligence. That's a 15.79% compound annual growth rate, the company said. Related: List of all sustainability industry research reports

7. HP Partner of the Year: HP Australia named Blue Connections IT (an Atturra Company) as its Sustainable Impact Partner of the Year for 2025. On a related note, Blue Connections IT's business operations in October 2025 were certified carbon neutral for the third year in a row. 8. Cisco Partners of the Year: Cisco's Partnering for Purpose winners for 2025 included KIW, Morgan Solar, EchoStor Technologies and Iron Bow, the networking company said. Related: Cisco sustainability strategy and channel partner implications

9. Lenovo - Refurbished Hardware Services: Lenovo Certified Refurbishment Services, a new addition to its IT sustainability and lifecycle solutions portfolio, are now available in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). The service "gives organizations the ability to refurbish their existing Lenovo devices, restoring useful life and enabling redeployment to deliver cost savings, maximize IT budgets and reduce e-waste," Lenovo said.

10. Lenovo - Liquid Cooling for Data Centers: Lenovo has expanded its Neptune liquid cooling technology across its data center portfolio. Lenovo Neptune enables servers to operate with about 40% lower power than air-cooled systems, the company asserts.

11. Partnership - Carbon Removal: Keep an eye on Reverion and Frontier, which are working together to capture CO2 while also generating clean energy from solid oxide fuel cells. True believes apparently include Stripe, Google, Shopify, and McKinsey Sustainability, as well as Autodesk, H&M Group, and Workday.

12. Microsoft - Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI): Microsoft will not publish an updated version of its annual diversity and inclusion report for 2025, ESG Dive reported. Instead, Microsoft will demonstrate its D&I progress through formats like stories, insights and videos, which Microsoft believes are “more dynamic and accessible” and “show inclusion in action,” according to a Microsoft statement to ESG Dive.

B. Sustainable IT Investments, Funding, Earnings and Business Launches

1. M&A - IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) Services: Renewtech, a European provider of sustainable IT hardware solutions, has acquired Intelligent Servers, a UK-based provider of refurbished IT solutions. 2. Accelerator: OceanHub Africa has opened applications for it 2026-27 accelerator program. Related: List of more than 100 sustainability accelerators and incubators

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies, Regulations and News

1. COP31 Preview: Cop31 will take place in late 2026 in the Mediterranean city of Antalya. While a representative from Turkey will be formally elected as “the president”, Australia will appoint a vice-president to lead the negotiations. (Source: The Conversation)

2. United States - City of Philadelphia Partner Program: The Office of Sustainability (OOS) has selected multiple community-based organizations for a Climate Resilience Partner Program. Climate Resilience Partners and Ambassadors will: 

  • Provide insight on climate resilience solutions to guide future City programs and investments. 
  • Share community input and concerns from their planning districts with City leadership. 
  • Work with OOS and the project team to design and host community engagement events. 
  • Be part of creating a Climate Resilience Toolkit for residents. 

3. Canada Loosens Climate Rules: Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney signed an agreement with Alberta's premier that rolls back certain climate rules to spur investment in energy production, while encouraging construction of a new oil pipeline to the West Coast, Reuters reported.

4. Australia - Environmental Regulations: Australia is set to pass a landmark bill that will overhaul its environmental laws, Bloomberg reported. The legislation will introduce tighter nature protections while clearing the path for faster approvals of major projects in sectors including renewable energy and mining, the report noted.

5. Australia Carbon Reduction Goals: Australia will need to sharply accelerate emissions reductions to meet its 2035 target, data from the government's top climate advisory body showed, according to Reuters.

6. European Union - Combustion Car Policy: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to send a letter to the European Union Commission urging it to rethink EU rules that will effectively end sales of new carbon dioxide-emitting cars in 2035, Reuters reported.

7. Singapore - EV Charger Network: TotalEnergies will cease its Singapore EV charger operations, essentially transferring certain systems to the Land Transport Authority, SPH Media reported.

8. Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates - ESG and Climate Goals: Seventy-six percent of CEOs in Saudi Arabia report that ESG objectives are now fully integrated into their corporate strategies, significantly above global levels, KPMG research found. Elsewhere, 44% of UAE CEOs report aligning climate objectives with business goals, the research found.
