Sustainable IT and Climate Tech News 07 November: atNorth, Lenovo, Workiva, More

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. ESG Software - Financial Results: Workiva revenue was $186 million in Q3 of 2024, up 17% compared to Q3 of 2023. GAAP net loss was $17 million compared with a net loss of $56 million for Q3 of 2023. Revenues exceeded Wall Street's expectations, but earnings fall short of third-party forecasts.

2. Partnership - Fortune 1000 Engagements: VERSES AI and goProdigii are partnering to promote sustainability planning and compliance solutions with Fortune 1000 clients.

3. Executive Leadership: Cushman & Wakefield has announced Megan Such as head of sustainability for the UK.

4. Executive Leadership - Consulting: WSP named Mark Naysmith as global chief operating officer, effective January 2025.

5. Partnership - Data Centers: atNorth has expanded two data centers in Iceland. A partnership with AgTech startup Hringvarmi will recycle excess data center heat for use in food production. The goal: utilize waste heat to grow microgreens in collaboration with the food producer Rækta Microfarm, the companies said.

6. Supercomputer - Nuclear Fusion Research: ENEA, a National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development, plans to deploy a Lenovo HPC system at the Portici (Naples) hub. The goal: Accelerate research activities on clean energy, in particular on nuclear fusion, the organizations said.

7. Solar Energy Financial Results: The latest SolarEdge earnings missed Wall Street's expectations. Multiple solar energy firms have announced weak revenues and soft profits amid a saturated product market and heightened interest rates that choke customer adoption.

8. AI Lawsuit: The Canadian Legal Information Institute (CanLII) has filed a lawsuit against Caseway AI, claiming the AI chatbot infringed on its copyrighted work, CBC reported.

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Funding - Clean Energy: ZE Energy, a Paris-based developer of photovoltaic power plants and energy storage solutions, raised €54 million (USD $57.8 million) to fund continued European expansion, ESG Today reported.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. COP29 - Trump Presidency Implications: Trump’s election victory sparked a palpable sense of dismay among the climate community, with two key architects of the landmark Paris Agreement warning that the result will stall global efforts to protect the environment, CNBC reported.

2. COP29 - Financial Commitments: Efforts by the United States and others to persuade more countries to contribute to a new global climate financing initiative risks undermining the Paris agreement, Singapore's Environment Minister Grace Fu said, according to Reuters.

3. European Union - Auto Sales: The EU climate chief wants to maintain CO2 deadlines on cars, Reuters reported.

4. United Arab Emirates: The UAE is seeking to cut emissions by 47% by 2035, Reuters reported.

5. Egypt - Partnership: IBM's sustainability accelerator and the Environment Without Borders Foundation (EWBF) have launched Green Taqa to "expand access to clean energy resources and providers for communities across Egypt." The effort seeks to "facilitate access to, track usage of, and provide user support for clean energy," the companies said.

6. Australia - Net Zero Commitment Debate: Matt Kean, chair of Australia's Climate Change Authority, says ‘climate change waits for no one’ as pressure mounts on coalition to dump net zero commitment, The Guardian reported.
