Sustainability News 24 April 2024: atNorth, AWS, FLINTpro, IDC Research, Tapp Green, More

Here is today’s sustainability news, research and analysis for technology partners; renewable energy and green IT service providers; Today's sustainability news also involves management consultants; CIOs; chief sustainability officers (CSOs), c-suite members and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable Technology, Talent, Partnerships and Green IT Alliances

1. Data Centers - AI and Energy Demand: Data center energy consumption will expand at at a 26.4% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2023 to 2027, according to IDC. While generative AI applications will fuel some of that growth, genAI applications will also assist data center customers with IT efficiency optimization, ESG data analysis and other sustainability use cases, IDC said. 2. Marketing Services: Tapp Network, a digital agency, has launched Tapp Green -- a family of sustainability marketing and technology solutions for the renewable energy sector.

3. Business Expansion - Climate Risk Analytics: FLINTpro, an analytics company focused on climate risk analysis, has opened a new headquarters in Denver, Colorado. Moreover, recent hires include:

3. Internet of Things - HVAC Management: Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. will leverage Soracom cellular connections to remotely manage air conditioning, heating, and heat recovery/ventilation products. The strategy leverages Mitsubishi's cloud-based remote management software -- known as MELCloud.

4. Building Energy Management - Cloud Services: Abound Net Zero Management, a Carrier Global software platform designed to optimize energy efficiency and sustainability in buildings, leverages AWS as the underlying cloud platform. The software stack includes:

  • Amazon Bedrock, a "fully managed service that makes it simple to build and scale generative AI applications with foundation models," and 
  • Amazon Textract, a machine learning service that "automatically extracts text, handwriting, layout elements, and data from scanned documents."

6. Media Management: IPG Mediabrands has launched a Climate Action Accelerator Program, which is designed to "empower our clients and media partners with turnkey sustainability solutions rooted in science-informed action." Key partners include Schneider Electric, Carbon Direct and Cornell Engineering.

7. Solar Energy - Financial Question Marks: SunPower stock fell the most in four months after the rooftop solar power company disclosed plans to restate almost two years of financial results, Bloomberg reported.

B. Sustainability M&A, Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. M&A - Sustainable Homes: Investment firm LaPhair Capital Partners has acquired Kinexx Modular Construction, a developer of modular building and sustainable homes. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Scott Upshaw will be the new CEO of Kinexx.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. United States - Government Agencies: Roughly 62% of U.S. government agencies plan to explore solar energy and artificial intelligence to achieve sustainability goals in the next 12 to 24 months, according to the Deloitte 2024 U.S. public sector CxO sustainability survey.

2. European Union - ESG Regulations: Keep an eye on the  the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and these potential CSDDD implications for businesses of all sizes, as explained by consulting firm ERM.

3. United Kingdom - Greenwashing Warning: Firms operating in the UK are being advised to go through any products and services around which some sort of sustainability claim has been made, to ensure they’re not in the crosshairs of a UK greenwashing crackdown that’s due to take effect at the end of next month, Bloomberg reported. The Financial Conduct Authority’s plan to move ahead with anti-greenwashing rules has far-reaching implications for British businesses, and leaves them with only limited time to shield themselves from potential regulatory action, the report said.

4. Australia - Climate Disclosure Regulations: The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is telling local companies to prepare now for mandatory climate disclosure regulations.
