NTT Data Business Solutions, a major IT consulting firm that deploys and manages SAP enterprise software applications for customers, has outlined multiple net-zero carbon emissions goals. The company also continues to expand its green IT services for end-customers.
The overall strategy calls for the business to achieve:
A net-zero target for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to be achieved by 2035 – with an interim deadline of 2030 for the data centers.
A net-zero target for Scope 3 emissions to be achieved by 2040.
NTT DATA Business Solutions -- part of the NTT DATA group -- employs more than 13,500 people in more than 30 countries. The businesses are part of the larger NTT Group, a global IT services provider headquartered in Tokyo.
In a prepared statement about the report and the company's net-zero efforts, NTT DATA Business Solutions AG CEO Norbert Rotter said: "I am proud of the publication of our first Sustainability Report. It is an important step for NTT DATA Business Solutions and illustrates our commitment to sustainability as a core element of our corporate strategy. For us as a company and for me as CEO, sustainability orientation and transparent communication of our actions are fundamental prerequisites. We have a responsibility towards our employees, business partners, and customers as well as towards the environment and society generally. Technology can be an engine for positive change. As an IT service provider, we support our customers with innovative products and digital solutions that help them become more sustainable. While we recognize that we are still in the early stages of our journey, our first Sustainability Report is a clear statement of our aim to have a positive impact on our planet and on society."
Sustainability: Extending Beyond NTT Data Centers and Green IT
Among the company's key achievements: The IT consulting firm's major data centers in Germany have leveraged 100% green power since 2021, according to Jürgen Püerzer, CFO of NTT DATA Business Solutions.
Moreover, the sustainability efforts extend beyond IT infrastructure. For instance, the company's Travel and Mobility Policy is being revised with the aim of reducing emissions -- though specific details, goals and timing were not disclosed.
On the customer-facing front, NTT Data Solutions has developed IT solutions that will "enable its customers to record and reduce emissions, optimize business processes, and lower costs," the company said.
The customer-focused efforts involve SAP sustainability solutions as well as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT). "To us, 'Green IT' does not just mean 'Green Energy'; we also promote careful use of resources and actively support our customers with their green transformation by providing innovative software solutions," Püerzer said.
NTT Data-NTT Merger: What's Next?
Meanwhile, NTT Data and NTT plan to complete their long-planned merger in April 2024. At that time, David Costa will be chief sustainability business officer for the entire company. Among the anecdotes to note, the combined company will have:
Roughly $27 billion in annual revenues;
approximately 190,000 employees; and
key focus areas will span IT consulting, applications, data centers, networks, cloud and edge computing.
Ahead of the merger, NTT Data and its sister companies have inked multiple sustainability partnerships in recent months. Example developments include:
July 2023: The company launched the NTT Green & Food Corporation, a company using artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and other information communications technology (ICT) to "develop more efficient and sustainable food production systems."
May 2023:Partnered with Cisco Systems partnered to promote IoT (Internet of Things) as a service capabilities that help customers meet their sustainability goals.
April 2023:Partnered with NEC and NEC Platforms on multiple fronts to promote the decarbonation of society. The effort reinforces how some IT companies and energy companies are connecting the dots between information technology and sustainability.
