Bloomberg Hires Amy Springsteel as Chief Sustainability Officer: 4 Things to Know
June 11, 2024 by Joe Panettieri
Media and financial data giant Bloomberg has hired BNY Mellon veteran Amy Springsteel as chief sustainability officer (CSO), according to a letter from CEO Mike Bloomberg describing the company's latest impact report.
Springsteel joined Bloomberg in December 2023. She confirmed the career move via LinkedIn around March 2024, and CEO Mike Bloomberg shared an official public statement in June 2024.
Here are four things to know about Springsteel's experience and expertise, and Bloomberg's sustainability strategy.
1. Business Scope and Scale: Bloomberg, founded in 1981, is a provider of data, news and financial information. The privately held company, based in New York, has roughly 20,000 employees worldwide.
2. Sustainability Goals: Bloomberg is pursuing an 80% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 30% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 compared to a 2018 baseline. Longer term, the company wants to achieve a 90% reduction in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by 2040 compared to the 2018 baseline.
3. Sustainable Technologies: On the technology front, the company in 2023 "produced new datasets, tools, research and products that help firms assess the risks and opportunities arising from climate change itself," Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg also works closely with the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero, which helps financial firms to help them measure and manage emissions across their portfolios. Also of note: The Climate Data Steering Committee, a multi-partner group, unveiled the Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU) -- a climate data portal that will gather corporate emissions data in one place and make it freely available to everyone, Bloomberg notes.
4. Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO): CSO Amy Springsteel is head of Bloomberg's global sustainability office. She previously was global head of enterprise ESG at BNY Mellon. Springsteel has also held key sustainability and corporate responsibility posts at Voya Financial, Addison, and various consulting firms.
Bloomberg Chief Sustainability Officer: Why Technology Partners Should Care
By 2027, 25% of Global 2000 companies will have assigned a chief sustainability officer (CSO) responsible for meeting their organization’s ESG goals and making ESG-related IT purchasing decisions, according to IDC.
The financial services industry in particular, faces numerous sustainability challenges and associated regulations.
The bottom line: Technology partners need to extend their sales, marketing, engagement and support strategies to successfully fulfill those CSO customer needs, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.
