Sustainable IT and Climate Tech News 29 January 2025: ClickShare Research; Microsoft Energy Infrastructure; More

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. IT Services: ClickShare has unveiled IT Sustainability research that "uncovers how IT leaders are pushing forward sustainability goals — and where they can make an even bigger impact in 2025," the company said.

2. IT Consulting: PwC has launched a Sustainability Academy in Lagos within the larger PwC Nigeria Business School.

3. Executive Leadership: Accounting and advisory firm BDO has named Hannah Routh as its head of sustainability and ESG in the UK, ESG Today reported.

4. Executive Leadership - Microsoft Energy Strategy: Microsoft has shifted Erin Henderson from head of its nuclear development acceleration to director of energy infrastructure.

5. Executive Leadership - HVAC Solutions: Gradient has hired Patrick Bischoff to succeed co-founder Vince Romanin as CEO. Romanin how shifts to CTO. Bischoff arrives with enterprise SaaS software, climate tech, and renewable energy expertise, Gradient noted. Bischoff previously was COO at Recurve. Earlier, he held executive and board positions at World Energy Solutions and Greensmith Energy Solutions.

6. Software - Scope 3 Data Management: Tracera, formerly known as ESG Flo, is touting a software platform that allows end-customers to track and automatically collect, verify, and audit their Scope 3 data.

7. Partnership - ESG Software Capabilities: Locus Technologies and Sophare AI are partnering to enhance the Locus ESG software platform to address three areas:

  • European Union Pay Transparency Directive Compliance;
  • Global Gender Pay Gap Reporting; and
  • Alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.

8. Expansion - Renewable Energy Technology: GE Vernova plans to invest more than $10 million in its Pittsburgh facility over the next two years to expand capabilities across its electrification segment, the company said.

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Funding - Data Center Energy Efficiency: VEIR has raised $75 million in Series B funding led by Munich Re Ventures, with participation from new and existing investors. This fundng will "accelerate VEIR’s commercialization efforts for its innovative solutions serving data centers, utilities, and renewable energy developers," the company said. VEIR’s superconducting solutions deliver "up to 10 times the power of traditional cables while operating at the same voltage and enabling a smaller electrical footprint," the company said. As a result, "data center operators gain efficiency, improved server latency, and simplified campus designs," the company said.

2. M&A - Data Center Consulting Services: Salute has acquired Keysource Group, a provider of sustainable data centre solutions and strategic advisory services for EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) customers. Salute's EMEA team will ultimately span 500 people, including including 130 Keysource employees, the buyer said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. United States - Texas Solar Energy Partnership: Meta has enabled the construction of four new solar energy projects in Texas by expanding its clean energy relationship with Zelestra, a global, multi-technology, customer-focused renewable energy company, the companies said.

2. United States - Hawaii Renewable Energy Policy: Governor Josh Green, unveiled an executive order to "promote and expedite the development of renewable energy" in the state of Hawaii.

3. Switzerland Carbon Reduction Goals: Switzerland's government approved new climate targets, proposing a cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 of at least 65% compared to 1990 levels, Reuters reported. Switzerland's efforts to counteract global warming came under close scrutiny in 2024 when a top European court ruled that the country was not doing enough to tackle climate change, Reuters noted.
