Sustainable IT and Climate Tech News 28 February 2025: Is Green IT Services Forecast Overly Optimistic?

February 28, 2025 by Joe Panettieri

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. Green IT Services Market Forecast - Overly Optimistic?: The green IT services market will reach $69.4 billion by 2032, up from $18.8 billion in 2023, according to SNS Insider. That's a 15.65% compound annual growth rate (CAGR). Still, the report may be a bit misleading. In addition to including pure-play sustainable IT companies such as Schneider Electric, the report also tracks cloud and IT infrastructure products from Dell Technologies and other hardware providers. Some of the tracked products aren't necessarily purchased for green IT initiatives, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.

2. AI and Building Energy Management (BEM): Fully 55% of survey respondents currently use AI for overall building energy management (BEM), according to Wakefield Research and Honeywell. The study involved 250 U.S. building managers and decision makers. Each of the participants manages real estate with more than 250 building occupants.

3. Financial Services: Goldman Sachs is more than 80% of the way to meeting its 2030 goal of putting $750 billion toward supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy, Bloomberg reported.

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Private Equity - Renewable Energy Struggles: Private equity firms are marking down valuations in the renewable energy market because many of the startups are not sustainable without government subsidies, Bloomberg reported. PE firms taking a potential hit include BlackRock Inc., Riverstone Holdings and Canada’s Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec, the report said.

2. Financing - AI Data Centers: Facebook parent Meta Platforms is seeking to raise roughly $35 billion for AI data center projects, Bloomberg reported. Apollo Global Management is involved in the financing talks, the report said.

3. M&A - ESG Software and Financial Services: Dasseti, a software development firm focused on the financial services market, has acquired Metric, a provider of ESG measurement and reporting software. Metric, founded in 2020, is based in Chicago, Illinois. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

4. M&A - Renewable Energy: Innergex Renewable Energy Inc. surged after pension manager Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec agreed to buy the Canada-based power company for about C$10 billion (US$7 billion) including debt, Bloomberg reported.

5. M&A - Renewable Energy: Brookfield Asset Management is acquiring various U.S. onshore renewable businesses from UK-based power company National Grid for $1.735 billion, ESG Today reported.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. European Union - CSRD Changes: The European Commission has launched Omnibus -- a new approach to sustainability that significantly reduces the scope and reporting required under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (“CSRD”), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (“CSDDD”) and the EU Taxonomy (“Taxonomy”), JD Supra reported.

2. United States - EPA Spending Cuts: Shortly after President Trump said Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin plans to cut 65% of the EPA's staff, the White House clarified and said Trump was referring to agency spending, The Hill reported.
