Sustainable IT and Climate Tech News 20 December 2024: Atos, Honeywell, Siemens, Skytree, More

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. Partnership - IT Services: Global IT consulting firm Atos earned honorable mention as an Operation Pioneer at the 2nd Siemens Zero-Carbon Pioneer Award ceremony. This honor recognize's Atos leadership in "delivering sustainable data centers and cloud services, positioning the company as a pioneer in embedding sustainability into its operations and driving the decarbonization of IT infrastructure," the companies said.

2. Electric Vehicles and Labor Expenses: A Rivian Automotive-UAW agreement gives the UAW a path to unionize Rivian's workforce after the EV maker becomes profitable, Bloomberg reported and SeekingAlpha summarized.

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Renewable Energy Investment Writedowns: BlackRock plans to write down the value of its flagship renewable fund, Bloomberg reported. The writedown involves investments in Northvolt (which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection) and SolarZero (which ceased operations), among other underperforming assets.

2. Breakup Guidance: Honeywell is working with Goldman Sachs as it evaluates a separation of its aerospace business, according to a Dealreporter item that SeekingAlpha summarized. The overall Honeywell business remains focused on "three powerful megatrends – automation, the future of aviation and energy transition," the company has repeatedly said.

3. M&A - Solar Power Project: Altus Power is acquiring a Maine solar power project from Emeren Group. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

4. M&A - Clean Energy Consulting, Software: Franklin Energy, backed by private equity firm Abry Partners, has acquired AESC and EVA Green Power. The buyer gains engineering, consulting, energy systems designed and build expertise. AESC's consulting services and software tools allow customers to reduce energy consumption. EVA Green Power designs and installs solar, battery, electric vehicle supply equipment, HVAC, building controls, and more.

5. M&A - Carbon Capture Startup: Skytree has acquired Dutch direct air capture (DAC) startup ReCarbn, a spin-off from the University of Twente. ReCarbn's three co-founders — Guus Dubbink (CEO), Ewout Ruijs (CPO), and Sophia Hummelman (CCO) — will join the Skytree team.
