January 2, 2025 by Joe Panettieri

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. Decarbonization Tool: Siemens continues to tout the Decarbonization Business Optimizer -- a free tool that helps customers to "address the overwhelming complexity of decarbonizing buildings and the financing needed to get to net-zero emissions."

2. IT Consulting and Accounting Services: KPMG's annual revenue was $38.4 billion for fiscal year 2024, up 5.1% from 2023. KPMG said investments in technology and AI; talent; and ESG drove the growth. On the sustainability front, KPMG continued to" invest in sustainability-related services in response to increasing demand from clients, including decarbonization, ESG compliance and disclosure requirements and transformation of related governance, controls, data and IT systems," the company said. Still, KPMG did not discuss specific revenue figures for sustainable IT services.

3. Net-Zero Banking Alliance: Citigroup, Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are the latest global banks to exit the Net Zero Banking Alliance, Reuters reported. Wells Fargo and Goldman Sachs exited the group in December 2024. Top banks have been under pressure from some U.S. Republican politicians over their membership, Reuters notes, with accusations that any move to limit finance to fossil fuel companies could breach antitrust rules.

4. EV Charger Management Platform: ChargeLab is offering migration services for Shell Sky -- a cloud-based EV charger management system that's set to shut down on April 30, 2025. Shell Sky is based on Greenlots software that Shell acquired in 2019.

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Funding for M&A: Snow Lake Energy has raised roughly $20 million in a bid to expand existing projects while also exploring potential clean energy and mineral-related acquisitions. Existing efforts involve two uranium projects and two hard rock lithium projects.

2. Data Center Funding and Business Launch: DayOne of Singapore has launched as an independent data center group after raising raising $1.2billion in series B funding. DayOne, formerly known as GDS International (GDSI), focuses mostly on the Asia-Pacific market. The company's sustainability efforts include "cutting-edge cooling technologies, renewable energy adoption, and green building designs aimed at reducing environmental impact and enhancing operational resilience," DayOne said.

3. M&A - Data Centers: Bit Digital of New York has acquired a site in Montreal, Canada, that will become an operational data center by May 2025, the buyer said. The acquisition cost US$23.3 million, and Bit Digital plans to spend an additional US$19.3 million to develop the site. The buyer specializes in high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure. On the sustainability front, Bit Digital plans to retrofit the site with advanced cooling technology, including direct-to-chip liquid cooling, which enhances energy efficiency and supports AI and other high-performance workloads with 150kW rack density, the company said. Bit Digital is collaborating with third parties to "implement a heat reject loop to further enhance the sustainability profile of the datacenter. The facility will be powered by 100% renewable hydroelectricity provided by Hydro-Quebec," the firm said.

4. M&A - Engineering Services: Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE) of India has acquired CDI
Engineering Solutions
of Houston. CDI, backed by roughly 600 employees, offers engineering, procurement, and construction management services across industries, including energy, chemicals, semiconductors, and battery manufacturing. Key focus areas include clean energy transitions, decarbonization, and resilient infrastructure. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. South Korea - Net Zero Building Strategy: South Korea has update its Basic Plan for Green Buildings to help speed zero-energy building certifications, Chosun Biz reported.

2. Puerto Rico Power Outage: Nearly all of Puerto Rico suffered a power outage just ahead of the New Year. LUMA Energy began to restore power to some mission-critical customers a few hours before the start of 2025, Newsweek reported.
