Sustainable IT Services News for Channel Partners and MSPs: 22 September 2025

Here is today's sustainable IT services news, research and analysis for channel partners, MSPs, climate accounting professionals, and the chief sustainability officers (CSOs) they serve.

A. Sustainable IT Partnerships, Strategic Alliances and Strategies

1. Consulting: A report from EY and WBCSD, titled “Accelerating GHG Emissions Reduction”, highlights how businesses can accelerate emissions reductions through collaboration across their value chains.

2. Data Centers and Circular Economy Strategies: ERM is promoting circular economy strategies for organization that build data centers.

3. Data Center Partnership: Princeton Digital Group (PDG) has partnered with Flexidao and Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) to "pioneer the implementation of time-matched, carbon-free energy (CFE) consumption at its 150MW MU1 data center in Mumbai," the companies said.

4. IT Hardware: Lenovo earned an AA+ rating on the 2025 Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index, the index’s second-highest rating.

5. Leadership - ESG Setback?: Currys is shutting down its board ESG committee, raising concern from some that UK-listed companies may be starting to row back from their commitments to sustainability, The Sunday Times reported.

6. Carbon Credits: Google has partnered with Vaulted Deep in a bid to permanently remove CO2 and eliminate methane emissions from waste, the search giant said in a blog. Related: See Google sustainability strategy timeline for channel partners.

7. Meta and Facebook Power Trading: Meta Platforms, parent of Facebook, is moving to break into the wholesale power-trading business to better manage the massive electricity needs of its data centers, Bloomberg reported. The company filed an application with U.S. regulators to sell energy, capacity, and certain ancillary services through a subsidiary, Atem Energy, the report said.

8. Higher Education Grant: Western Washington University’s Sustainability Pathways program has received a $280,000 grant from the Washington Climate Corps Network (WCCN). The program "provides pathways into green economy careers while advancing climate and sustainability work," the university said.

9. Chief Sustainability Officer: Lavazza Group has named Pietro Mazzà as chief innovation, sustainability & institutional relations officer.

B. Sustainable IT Investments, Funding, Earnings and Business Launches

1. M&A - Energy Consultancy: West Monroe has acquired 2050 Partners, a consulting firm that helps utilities and clients across the energy sector to navigate decarbonization, energy efficiency, and clean energy regulatory initiatives. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. 

2. M&A - Renewable Energy Consulting: SLR Consulting has acquired Powerhaus, a renewable energy consultancy based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Powerhaus, founded in 2018, has delivered 200-plus projects across Canada and the U.S. The efforts include utility-scale solar farms, battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV infrastructure, and overhead distribution connections. C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies, Regulations and News

1. COP30 Housing: A strike by construction workers in Belem has partially disrupted work on a COP30 Leaders' Village that is due to house dozens of world leaders in just six weeks' time. (Source: Reuters)

2. United States Energy Grid: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the Speed to Power initiative, which is designed to "accelerate the speed of large-scale grid infrastructure project development for both transmission and generation." The overall goal: "Enable the power needed to win the AI race." The announcement did not mention if or where renewable energy fits into the initiative.

3. United State - Built Environments: The National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) has rebranded the Sustainable Facilities Tool (SFTool) as the High Performance Building Guide (HPBG). The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) originally built the tool. Federal agencies and industry partners can leverage the guide for to "promote smarter, more sustainable decisions from design through delivery," NIBS said.

4. United States - Santa Monica, California Pivot:  A plan to impose emission standards on more than 750 existing buildings was removed from the City Council agenda over concerns it could impact Santa Monica's struggling economy, a local media report said.

5. European Union - CSRD Debate: Multiple investor groups are pushing back against various CSRD sustainability disclosure rules, IPE reported.

6. Australia - Net Zero Forecast: Australia’s government is optimistic it can achieve its renewable-generation target by 2030 but isn’t ready to make forecasts beyond that, according to Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen, according to Bloomberg.

7. Ireland - Data Center Energy Policy: Ireland will allow data centers to use fossil fuels to power their operations, a shift that highlights the tension between economic growth and climate goals, Politico reported.

8. Global Cargo Shipping Costs: A group of shipping firms warned that the International Maritime Organization’s planned net zero rules risk imposing significant costs on the industry. Bloomberg reported.
