2024: Nvidia Sustainability and Climate Tech News

Poke around Nvidia's website, and you'll find these announcements related to sustainability, climate tech and energy efficiency. We'll update this timeline regularly each time a new announcement surfaces.

November 20 - AI Chips and Gigawatt Data Centers: Blackwell production is in full steam, and Nvidia will deliver this quarter more Blackwells than previously estimated, CEO Jensen Huang said during the company's earnings call. Moreover, Nvidia's data center technology offers the highest performance per watt, which "translates directly into the highest revenues for our partners," Huang asserted.

November 20 - Financial Results: Nvidia's revenue was $35.1 billion in Q3 of fiscal 2025, up 94% from Q3 of fiscal 2024. Despite the strong growth, Nvidia's stock fell slightly because Wall Street expectations are so lofty.

November 20 - COP29 Panel - AI and Energy Efficiency: During a panel discussion, executives from Deloitte, Crusoe Energy Systems, EON, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and NVIDIA sat down for a conversation about the energy efficiency of AI.

November 19 - AI and Quantum Processors: Nvidia and Google are partnering to design quantum artificial intelligence processors.

November 18 - AI Chips Overheating?: Nvidia’s new Blackwell AI chips apparently are overheating some servers, The Information reported. We'll listen for a potential Nvidia response during the company's November 20 earnings call.

November 5 - AI Chip Orders: Nvidia is shifting AI chip orders from Super Micro Computer to other suppliers amid Super Micro accounting question marks, Digitimes reported.

October 18 - Potential M&A - Nuclear Power and Data Centers: Ubitus K.K, a cloud services company backed by Nvidia, is looking to acquire land to build a data center in Kyoto, Shimane, or a prefecture in Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, owing to the availability of nuclear power in the region, Bloomberg reported and SeekingAlpha recapped.

October 16 - Google and Nvidia Blackwell Chips: Google Cloud is testing servers running on Nvidia's Blackwell line. The Google Cloud-Blackwell statement arrives roughly one week after Microsoft Azure claimed to be the first cloud running Blackwell on production systems.

October 11 - "Reasoning AI" Trend?: The emergence of "reasoning AI" will require cheaper computing, Nvidia's CEO predicted.

October 11 - Microsoft Deployment: Microsoft Azure is the first cloud to run Nvidia's Blackwell system, according to a Microsoft update.

October 4 - AI and Energy Efficiency: While some data center providers are struggling to find more energy to run AI applications, Nvidia Senior Director Joshua Parker says AI and accelerated computing are "driving energy efficiency and offering innovative solutions to global sustainability challenges," according to a podcast interview.

October 3 - Blackwell Chip Production: Next-generation Blackwell chips are in production, and customer demand is "insane" for the AI-optimized processors, CEO Jensen Huang told CNBC.

October 3 - Data Center Partnership: An NTT data center in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, will become a "Green Nexcenter” that leverages liquid-cooling systems and renewable energy, The Fast Mode reported. The center has also been certified under the NVIDIA DGX-Ready Data Center program, the report said.

October 3 - IT Consulting Partnership: Accenture and Nvidia have expanded their partnership, and Accenture formed an NVIDIA Business Group. The IT consulting firm plans to train roughly 30,000 employees on Nvidia's technology. The strategy involves Accenture AI Refinery, which "uses the full NVIDIA AI stack—including NVIDIA AI Foundry, NVIDIA AI Enterprise and NVIDIA Omniverse—to advance areas such as process reinvention, AI-powered simulation and sovereign AI," the IT consulting firm said. Accenture AI Refinery will be available on all public and private cloud platforms and will integrate with other Accenture Business Groups to accelerate AI across the SaaS and Cloud AI ecosystem.

September 19 - AI Solutions Partnership: G42 and Nvidia are partnering to "develop AI solutions aimed at boosting weather forecasting accuracy globally and will set up an operational base and climate tech lab in Abu Dhabi," Reuters reported.

September 9 - Liquid Cooling Technology: Giga Computing, a subsidiary of GIGABYTE, says its GIGABYTE G593 series servers support direct liquid cooling (DLC) technology to "advance green data centers using NVIDIA HGX H200 GPU."

September 4 - Alleged Antitrust Concerns: The U.S. Justice Department sent subpoenas to Nvidia, and other companies as it seeks evidence that the chipmaker violated antitrust laws, an escalation of its investigation into the dominant provider of AI processors, Bloomberg reported.

August 28 - Blackwell Chip Shipments: The company's next-generation AI GPU, known as Blackwell, will "ship several billion dollars" in Q4 of 2024 while ramping even higher in 2025, CEO Jensen Huang told Wall Street analysts during an earnings call on August 28, 2024.

August 9 - More on AI Chip Delay: Partner Super Micro Computer does not expect to see any meaningful volume of Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs until the quarter ending in March 2025, Seeking Alpha reported. Super Micro may see a few Blackwell GPUs in the quarter ended December 2024, but the real volume is more likely the March 2024 quarter, the report said.

August 5 - AI Chip Delay: Nvidia apparently will delay the delivery of its next-generation AI chips -- known as Blackwell. Nvidia apparently needs to correct Blackwell design flaws before shipping the new AI chips, Bloomberg Radio reported.
