18 New Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) to Know: January 2024 Recap

Multiple companies, government organizations and agencies hired or promoted chief sustainability officers (CSOs) during January 2024. The CSO appointments happened worldwide at organizations across multiple vertical markets -- including food, AI software, chemicals, financial services, government, precious metals and more.

Here are the newly named CSOs that technology partners need to know:

1. Javier Aguirre: AgroAmerica promoted Javier Aguirre to corporate affairs and chief sustainability officer (CSO). He previously held a director-level title. AgroAmerica specializes in food and food ingredients. Key focus areas include bananas, pineapples, tropical oil, food raw materials, logistics and transportation.

2. Catherine Atkin: Redwoods AI Inc hired attorney and carbon accounting legislation expert Catherine Atkin as CSO, the artificial intelligence (AI) software startup disclosed.

3. Nicklas Augustsson: Paint, chemical manufacturing and coating company Beckers Group promoted Nicklas Augustsson from global sustainability director to chief sustainability officer (CSO).

4. Samira Boussem: Flexstone Partners has named Samira Boussem as managing director and head of sustainability. Flexstone has $10.1 billion in assets under management. The company provides global institutional investors with investment management and advisory services across global private markets.

5. Alex Budden: Adriatic Metals hired Alex Budden for the newly created role of chief sustainability officer, reporting directly to the CEO Paul Cronin. Adriatic Metals, based in London, United Kingdom, is a precious and base metals explorer and developer. 

6. Pernilla Enkler: ScandiNova Systems AB hired Eternali veteran Pernilla Enkler as head of sustainability, quality and communications. Her start date was January 8, 2024. ScandiNova Systems develops various power solutions for medical technology, industrial and scientific applications. 

7. IIly Espino de Marotta: Panama Canal Deputy Administrator IIly Espino de Marotta took on the additional role of chief sustainability officer (CSO).

8. Jennifer Gonzalez: The City of Hoboken, New Jersey created a Department of Climate Action & Innovation. To lead the department, Director of Environmental Services Jennifer Gonzalez shifted to chief sustainability officer (CSO), according to Mayor Ravi S. Bhalla.

9 . Sophie Graham: Enterprise cloud software provider IFS named Sophie Graham as chief sustainability officer (CSO). She previously was global sustainability director.

10. David Hirschler: ERI, an IT asset disposition (ITAD) and electronics recycling company, promoted Senior Director David Hirschler to chief sustainability office (CSO).
