Sustainability News 25 April 2024: Danfoss, HPE, SAP, Vantage Data Centers, More

Here is today’s sustainability news, research and analysis for technology partners; renewable energy and green IT service providers; Today's sustainability news also involves management consultants; CIOs; chief sustainability officers (CSOs), c-suite members and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable Technology, Talent, Partnerships and Green IT Alliances

1. Revenues: Honeywell's Energy and Sustainability Solutions sales rose 5% on an organic basis in Q1 of 2024 compared to Q1 of 2023, the company said.

2. Business Forecast: Schneider Electric reaffirmed its 2024 business forecast -- which involves 6% to 8% organic revenue growth, Morningstar reported.

4. Partnership - Hospitality Data: BeCause and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) have partnered to help hotels more effectively manage their sustainability data.

5. Cloud Services - Engineering Consultancy: Danfoss, the global engineering firm, will leverage HPE GreenLake, SAP S/4HANA Cloud, and the RISE with SAP program to "accelerate the company’s sustainable cloud journey," the companies announced.

6. Partnership - Data Centers and Nuclear Energy: Terrestrial Energy and Schneider Electric have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop technologies for nuclear-powered data centers and industrial facilities. The nuclear technology involves small, modular, repeatable designs.

7. Partnership - Data Center Carbon Emissions: The Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) and infrastructure Masons (iMasons) are collaborating on sustainability initiatives that involve the iMasons Climate Accord (ICA). Together, the organizations are striving to help customers create "sustainable and scalable digital infrastructure capable of meeting the requirements for AI and HPC from the data center to the edge," OCP and iMasons said. The work involves Google, Meta, Microsoft and Schneider Electric -- which are focused on a building a standardized taxonomy for supplier carbon disclosures related to data center materials and equipment, the organizations said.

8. Executive Leadership - Renewable Energy: Mainstream Renewable Power has hired Aker Carbon Capture ASA veteran Julie Berg as CFO.

9. Executive Leadership - Solar and Energy Storage: EPC Power has hired Jim Fusaro as CEO.

10. Executive Leadership - Startup: Carbonova has hired Christopher Cornille as chief commercial officer. Moreover, the company recently raised $6 million in funding.

B. Sustainability M&A, Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Funding - Data Centers: Vantage Data Centers has secured a $3 billion green loan to fund the ongoing development of its North America data center platform. Wells Fargo Securities led the agreement. Also, Vantage is building a Dublin, Ireland data center that will leverage hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a renewable fuel, and gas fed by Gas Networks Ireland. Vantage Data Centers is committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030 

2. M&A - Mobile Technology & Data Analytics: EYSA Group, backed by private equity firm H.I.G. Capital, has acquired Net4Things, a data company focused on mobile sustainability. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

3. M&A - Software: rePurpose Global has acquired Bluebird Climate, a sustainability software company that "helps consumer brands assess, improve, and transparently communicate the environmental performance of their products, ingredients, and packaging." Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

4. M&A - Solar Solutions: SolaTrue and Southern Solar have merged. The deal, completed in January 2024, was publicly confirmed in April 2024. The combined business moves forward under the SolaTrue brand. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. COP29: Political leaders said this year’s COP29 talks will center on a challenge they’ve failed for years to overcome: massively increasing funds to help poorer countries fight global warming, Bloomberg reported. At the Petersberg Climate Dialogue, Germany’s foreign affairs minister Annalena Baerbock said developing nations would need $2 trillion annually, with half of that coming from foreign sources, the report noted.

2. United States - Solar Infrastructure: TotalEnergies is building New York State's largest onsite solar generating and storage system at JFK International Airport. The resulting renewable energy will come online incrementally in 2025 and 2026. 

3. United States - Building Regulations: The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has finalized the Clean Energy for New Federal Buildings and Major Renovations of Federal Buildings Rule. The rule aligns with President Biden's Federal Sustainability Plan to reach net-zero emissions from all federal buildings by 2045. 

4. United States - Energy Efficient Chips: Google, Vital Integration of Environmental Electronics, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and the Florida Semiconductor Institute signed a U.S. Department of Energy pledge to improve the energy efficiency of semiconductors. The pledge, known as Energy Efficiency Scaling for 2 Decades (EES2), now has 65 signatories. Key backers include Google, Intel, Microsoft, Micron, Synopsys, ARM, and AMD, among others.

5. United Kingdom - Wind Energy: The UK’s power grid is off to its greenest start ever in 2024, Bloomberg reported. Strong winds and a growing fleet of turbines propelled the renewable power source beyond fossil fuels in recent months, helping Britain reap the rewards of a yearslong effort to replace its polluting power system with a low-emissions one, the report said.
