Sustainable IT Services News 23 January 2026: SLR Buys WAP; Sam Altman's Exowatt Pursues Hyperscalers; More

Here is today's sustainable IT services news, research and analysis for channel partners, MSPs, climate accounting professionals, consultants and the chief sustainability officers (CSOs) they serve.

A. Sustainable IT Partnerships, Strategic Alliances and Strategies

1. Data Center Energy Services: Exowatt -- funded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman -- has launched ExoRise, a new business arm that offers powered land and energy infrastructure for hyperscale data centers. ExoRise converges land, power, and Exowatt’s P3 solar technology -- which stores energy as heat and converts it to electricity on demand, delivering power day and night, the company said. Nic Bustamante, chief data center officer, will lead partnerships with hyperscaler off-takers and infrastructure financiers, the company said. Bustamante previously held key infrastructure positions at Apple, Microsoft, Google and Rackspace.

2. IT Services - Employee Energy Consumption: Infosys is surveying employees about their household electricity consumption as part of the company's overall sustainability prgram, Economic Times of India reported. The company has urged employees to adopt energy efficiency measures at home, as the buildings in Infosys consume 50-60% less electricity compared to conventional buildings, the report said.

3. Executive Leadership - IT Services and ESG Consulting: Wolters Kluwer has named Maria Montenegro as CEO of its Corporate Performance & ESG (CP & ESG) division. She previously was chief strategy & innovation officer. The division, formed in March 2023, provides software and services that "help corporations and other organizations manage financial, operational, and sustainability performance, manage risks, meet regulatory compliance, and improve safety and productivity," Wolters Kluwer said.

4. Executive Leadership - Energy: Gevo Chief Business Development Officer Alex Clayton has shifted to a new title - chief carbon officer. Gevo is striving to "advance voluntary carbon markets" while creating "a tremendous opportunity to build value for our shareholders," the company said. Clayton's new role surfaced amid Gevo's CEO transition to Paul Bloom from Patrick Gruber.

5. Resignation - Chief Climate Officer: New York City Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Rit Aggarwala -- the city's first chief climate officer -- is stepping down after four years leading the agency, a local report said. 6. Higher Education: The Buckley Center for Sustainability Education at CU Boulder -- launched with a $10 million gift from alumnus Spike Buckley, has been renamed the SPIKE Center for Sustainability Education.

B. Sustainable IT Investments, Funding, Earnings and Business Launches

1. M&A - Consulting: SLR Consulting has acquired WAP Sustainability, which specializes in life cycle assessment, environmental product declarations, carbon accounting, and ESG advisory services. WAP Sustainability, founded in 2009, is based in Nashville, Tennessee. The acquired business has nearly 100 employees, SLR said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Private equity firm Ares Management has owned SLR Consulting since 2022. Related: List of SLR Consulting acquisitions.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies, Regulations and News

1. Global Energy Transition: India is electrifying faster and using fewer fossil fuels per capita than China did when it was at similar levels of economic development, according to a new report from the think tank Ember, Bloomberg reported.

2. European Union - Energy Transition: Wind and solar surpassed fossil fuels as a source of electricity in the European Union in 2025 for the first time, according to the think tank Ember, Bloomberg reported.

3. United Kingdom - Net Zero Building Challenges: The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (UKNZCBS) faces various design challenges, a pilot report said.
