Sustainable IT and Climate Tech News 18 December 2024: Accenture, CleanCapital, Certivo, Oracle, PwC, More

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. Partnership - IT and Compliance Services: PwC is leveraging the Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications Suite to help customers address sustainability-related regulations, the two companies said. Key focus areas include the  Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Pillar Two tax requirements, Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) standards, and Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) rules, according to PwC.

2. Partnership - IT Services: Silverfern IT and HFM are partnering to help a Western Australia government agency -- known as the Department of Water, Environmental and Regulation (DWER) -- to address various sustainability goals, according to Australia Reseller News (ARN). The effort involves the IBM Envizi ESG platform.

3. New Hires - Compliance and Sustainability Software: Certivo has named Vanessa (Vee) Vasquez as chief revenue officer and vice president, and Kevin Kolhede as director of sales and marketing. Both team members report to CEO Kunal Chopra.

4. New Hire - Conferences: BCD Meetings & Events has hired Thiago Araujo as global sustainability director.

5. Cloud Software - Mining Solutions: In a lengthy blog, Microsoft described how AI can help mining companies with their innovation and sustainability initiatives.

6. AI Chip Purchases: Microsoft has acquired twice as many Nvidia AI chips as rivals, the Financial Times reported.

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Accelerator: The Colorado-Wyoming Climate Resilience Engine (CO-WY Engine), in partnership with Microsoft, has launched a Digital Twins Deployment Accelerator. The program helps startups that develop and commercialize digital twins technology, with a focus on climate resiliency applications. The accelerator will provide business, technical, and commercialization support to roughly 10 to 12 startup ventures.

2. Funding - Refurbished Electronics: Revibe, which built a B2C marketplace for refurbished electronics, has raised $7 million in Series A funding. ISAI and Resonance co-led the round.

3. M&A - IT Consulting and Managed Energy Services: Accenture has acquired IQT Group, an MSP that helps customers to "plan, execute and manage net-zero infrastructure projects more efficiently."  IQT Group, based in Rovigo, Italy, has more than 450 employees. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

4. M&A - Solar Infrastructure: CleanCapital has acquired a portfolio of 40 solar energy assets totaling 22.7 megawatts (MW) from Kendall Sustainable Infrastructure (‘KSI’). The solar infrastructure sites are mostly in Vermont, with some also in New York and California.

5. M&A - Infrastructure Support: Pearce Services has acquired Unified Power, a national provider of repair and maintenance services for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and backup power generators. The combined business will have more than 3,500 employees. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. Ireland - Information and Communications Technology (ICT): Ireland plans to work with international partners to improve the sustainability of ICT procurement. The effort, known as the Circular and Fair ICT Pact (CFIT), is a voluntary initiative that strives to "accelerate circularity, fairness, and sustainability in the ICT sector."

2. Japan Energy Transition: Japan will strive to leverage renewable energy sources to fulfill 40% to 50% of its energy grid needs by 2040, Reuters reported.
