Sustainable IT and Climate Tech News 13 February 2025: Greenly Carbon Accounting Software Update; DataBolt Bets $5B On Data Centers; More

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. Carbon Accounting Software Platform: Greenly has expanded its carbon accounting software platform to support the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The software makes it easy for EU importers to "identify low-carbon suppliers and reduce carbon tariffs" related to CBAM.

2. Professional Services: WSP unveiled a three-year plan to grow net revenues by 40% by 2027, the global professional services company said. WSP's core services include carbon reduction strategies for built environments.

3. Partnership - EV Chargers: XCharge North America and the Orlando Utilities Commission are partnering to "explore how resilient charging solutions can enhance the electrical grid’s stability while reducing costs," the two organizations said.

4. EV Fleet Transition Tool: CLEAResult has launched the ChooseEV Fleet Electrification Assessment Tool – which helps utilities to support customers transitioning their fleets to electric vehicles (EV).

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. M&A - ITAD: Service Express has acquired Top Gun Technology, a data center maintenance and ITAD (IT asset disposition) service provider in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. United States - Climate Funding Clawbacks?: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will attempt to claw back $20 billion in funding for climate projects awarded under President Joe Biden’s signature climate law, Bloomberg reported.

2. U.S. to Counter CSRD?: The U.S. may use “trade tools” to retaliate against European ESG regulations that affect American companies, Bloomberg reported. The big focus area: Countering and neutralizing the European Union's CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), the report said.

3. United States - Virginia Data Center Energy Demand: The biggest utility in Virginia, Dominion Energy, saw demand from data centers in development almost double in the last half of 2024, Bloomberg reported.

4. European Union - Potential ESG Rule Changes:  Officials are looking at ways to ease rules that require firms to clean up their value chains under the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), Bloomberg reported.

5. Saudi Arabia - Data Center Partnership: NEOM and data center developer DataVolt are partnering to design and develop a net-zero AI factory campus in Oxagon, Saudi Arabia. DataVolt will invest $5 billion in the buildout, which is expected to be operational by 2028, the organizations said.
