Sustainability News for Technology Partners: 29 December 2022

1. Research - Sustainability and IT Alignment: Only 51% of sustainability managers say their companies are on track with their sustainability goals, and about half of all IT teams are failing to take proper considerations for sustainability when making technology purchases, according to a report from Wakefield Research and Pure Storage.

2. Data Center Temperature Settings: Equinix has committed to reducing its overall power use by increasing operating temperature ranges within its data centers – the first such commitment by an operator of colocation data centers, the company asserts. Over time, this initiative is expected to enable thousands of Equinix customers to reduce the Scope 3 carbon emissions associated with their data center operations, the company said.

3. Sustainable Data Centers in Space: The European Union has selected Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between the French technology corporation Thales Group (67%) and Italian defense conglomerate Leonardo (33%), to study the feasibility of the ASCEND (Advanced Space Cloud for European Net zero emissions and Data sovereignty) program, El Pais reported. The ASCEND initiative is part of the Horizon Europe program and its goal is to deploy data centers in Earth orbit, the report noted.

4. Research - Building Management System (BMS) Market Forecast: The global market for BMS will reach $5.15 billion by 2026 from $3.52 billion in 2021, which represents a 7.9% compound annual growth rate, according to Frost & Sullivan's BMS market forecast. BMS systems typically include electric systems monitoring; HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning); central fume collection & vacuum systems; technical steam system; hot water system and central heating; chilled water system; sprinkler system for fire safety; and more.

5. Asia: Singapore has a flawless sustainability reporting rate, but there are still areas it needs to improve, says KPMG's Cherine Fok in an interview with finews.asia.
