Sustainability and Green IT Services News for Technology Partners: 27 November 2023

Here is today’s sustainability news, research and analysis for technology partners; renewable energy and green IT service providers; management consultants; CIOs; chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and c-suite members.

A. Sustainable Technology, Talent, Partnerships and Green IT Alliances

1. Sustainability Software and AWS: Clarity AI, a technology company that delivers environmental and social insights to ensure that companies and consumers invest and purchase sustainably, runs entirely on AWS, the two companies said. 

2. Partnership - Green IT Services: A "revolutionary partnership between reseller Green IP and global collaboration service provider Evolve IP is set to transform the cloud communications landscape, offering an innovative green ecosystem business model," according to Tech Buzz Ireland.

3. Partnership - IT Consulting: EY US and Aspen Technology are partnering to help "clients in industrial and energy markets meet the demand for resources while also achieving sustainability targets across industries, including power and utilities, oil and gas, chemicals and advanced materials, industrial products, and mining and metals sectors," the two companies said.

4. Partnership - Hydrogen Power: University College London and Hyundai Motor Company have agreed to jointly research hydrogen production, fuel cells and electrification technologies, leveraging UCL's new Advanced Propulsion Lab, the companies said.

5. Research - Oil and Gas Companies: Despite earning average annual revenues of $3.5 trillion since 2018, oil-and-gas companies are spending just 2.5% of their investment on clean energy, which is about 1% of the global clean-energy spend, according to the International Energy Agency. And 60% of that comes from just four companies out of thousands of producers. Source: The Wall Street Journal.

B. Sustainability M&A, Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Investment - ESG and Facilities Management: Pictet has invested in Pareto FM, an ESG-driven provider of technical and facilities services. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. At the same time, NVM Private Equity exited Pareto FM -- generating a 4.2X return to investors.

2. Investment - EV Technologies: Multiple investors -- including GM Ventures, Stellantis Ventures, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) and the University of Minnesota (UMN), have pumped $33 million into Niron Magnetics, which specializes in rare earth-free permanent magnets. The magnets are "essential components in all automobiles, fundamental to audio systems, fuel pumps, air circulation, electric vehicle (EV) drivetrains, and much more," Niron said.

3. M&A Cancelled: ShiftCarbon has cancelled plans to acquire Zero Carbon Technologies, and ShiftCarbon will also wind down its Tracesafe IoT cloud platform. The moves will allow ShiftCarbon to focus on its platform for carbon accounting, offsets, and MRV (Measurement, Reporting and Verification) automation.

4. M&A - Environmental Services: Celnor Group, backed by Inflexion Private Equity, has acquired Brownfield Solutions -- a provider of environmental services. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

5. M&A - Green Data Centers: HIVE Digital Technologies has acquired a data center in Boden, Sweden. HIVE will pay up to $750,000 in cash and $1.5 million payable in common shares. HIVE Digital Technologies positions itself as the "first cryptocurrency mining company listed for trading on the TSX Venture Exchange with a sustainable green energy focus."

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. COP28 - Oil Pitch?: The COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber allegedly used his climate summit role to push oil trade with foreign government officials, the Centre for Climate Reporting and BBC reported.

2. COP28 - Not Attending: U.S. President Joe Biden and China's Xi Jinping don't plan to attend COP28, Bloomberg reported.

3. COP28 - Schneider Electric: With energy at the heart of over 70% of carbon emissions, Schneider Electric delegates at COP28 will highlight the untapped potential of electrification, automation and digital technologies and showcase the social and economic benefits of deploying such solutions in industries, buildings, homes, data centers, infrastructure, and transportation, the company said.

4. COP29 - Conference Location?: Next year's COP29 climate summit is supposed to be held in Eastern Europe, but Russian opposition to holding the event in a European Union country has left the event without a home, according to Reuters.

5. Europe - Net Zero Industry Act: The European Parliament voted to accept the Net Zero Industry Act (NZIA) on November 21. The act will seek to onshore manufacturing for renewable energy technologies like solar PV, battery energy storage and wind to the EU, PVTech reported.

6. Australia: The country is on track to cut its greenhouse emissions by 42% below 2005 levels by 2030, Australia Climate and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said, citing new projections that will be released formally this week, Bloomberg reported.

7. Germany: Economy Minister Robert Habeck pledged that Germany will find a swift solution to the turmoil triggered by a November 2023 court ruling on off-budget funds, and Habeck said Germany will secure the money for all projects essential for the transformation of Europe’s biggest economy, Bloomberg reported.

8. Japan: Innovation by Japan’s companies to advance clean energy technology can speed up the country’s efforts to curb emissions, according to former prime minister Yoshihide Suga, Bloomberg reported.

9. India: ​Johnson Controls has launched a white paper titled “Tech for Green India - Mission Net Zero."

10. Mozambique: The government approved a strategy to reduce the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels that it estimates will cost $80 billion to implement by 2050, a step aimed at winning finance to develop the economy, Bloomberg reported.
