Sustainability and Green IT Services News for Technology Partners: 19 January 2024

Here is today’s sustainability news, research and analysis for technology partners; renewable energy and green IT service providers; management consultants; CIOs; chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and c-suite members.

A. Sustainable Technology, Talent, Partnerships and Green IT Alliances

1. Expansion - IT Asset Disposition (ITAD): ARCOA has expanded from Illinois and opened an IT recycling facility in Denver, Colorado. Separately, CSI Leasing's EPC subsidiary has expanded its ITAD footprint in the Southeast United States. The company consolidated two smaller facilities in a larger, 205,000-square-foot location in Columbia, South Carolina.

2. Partnership - IT Services, AI and AWS: Capgemini and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have expanded their partnership to focus on AI. The effort will include steps to help customers address their sustainability goals, the two companies said.

3. New Consulting Firm: Sentinel Sustainability has launched in the United Kingdom to assist companies with their sustainability journeys.

4. Executive Leadership: Deloitte Ireland has named three executives to these posts...

  • Stephen Prendiville is now partner for the Real Assets Advisory, and Sustainable Infrastructure Leader.
  • David Linnane joins the consulting practice as the leader in the Enterprise Technology practice. 
  • Marie Lucey is now partner, M&A Advisory and Renewable Energy Leader.

5. Plug Power's Stock Plummets Again: Plug Power's stock fell more than 10% after the company disclosed plans to sell as much as $1B in shares, which one analyst said may not be enough to keep operations going past this year, SeekingAlpha reported.

B. Sustainability M&A, Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Green Data Center IPO?: Israeli real estate firm Azrieli Group Ltd. is considering options for its data center arm including a potential initial public offering, Bloomberg reported. The data center business, Green Mountain of Norway, may also raise a private round of funding instead of pursing the IPO, the report said.

2. Investments - Data Centers: Starwood Capital Group, the global real estate investment firm, has launched Starwood Digital Ventures to focus on data centers. The effort will involve data-center buildouts as well as partnerships with best-in-class data center operators.

3. Venture Capital - Leadership: Blue Vision Capital, an early stage climate-tech venture capital firm, has hired Vladimir Savic as managing partner. Savic's arrival reinforces Blue Vision Capital's global expansion. He is based in London, UK.

4. M&A - Financial Services & Renewable Energy: Commerzbank AG has acquired Aquila Capital -- which specializes in renewable energies and infrastructure projects. The deal will allow Commerzbank to "significantly drive forward the energy transition in Germany and Europe," the buyer said.

5. M&A - Engineering: BPA has acquired M&R Engineering. The buyer, based in Montreal, specializes in institutional, commercial, multi-residential, and industrial buildings, as well as sustainability. M&R Engineering is a mechanical and electrical consulting engineering firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Investment firm CDPQ owns a minority stake in BPA.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. United States - Donald Trump and Climate Tech: China-based Longi Green Energy Technology Co., the world’s biggest solar equipment maker, insists a second Donald Trump presidency won’t halt its plans to expand solar sales in the United States, Bloomberg reported.

2. United States - Houston: Three University of Houston decarbonization projects are part of a 19-project, $17.4 million funding program from the U.S. Department of Energy, the university said.

3. United States - Clean Energy and Manufacturing: Georgia will need to increase its clean energy supply in order for the state to meet demand for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, Governor Brian Kemp told world business leaders at Davos 2024, the Associated Press reported.

4. Canada - Vancouver Real Estate: Arthur Erickson Place on West Georgia Street has earned the Zero Carbon Building – Performance (ZCB) Standard certification from the Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC). The building's co-owners include KingSett Capital, Crestpoint Real Estate Investments, Vestcor and Reliance Properties.
