Sustainability and Green IT Services News for Technology Partners: 13 November 2023

Here is today’s sustainability news, research and analysis for technology partners; renewable energy and green IT service providers; management consultants; CIOs; chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and c-suite members.

A. Sustainable Technology, Talent, Partnerships and Green IT Alliances

1. Chief Sustainability Officers - New Roles: Former CSOs in new roles include...

  • Keurig Dr. Pepper has named Monique Oxender as chief corporate affairs officer. She previously was the company's senior VP & chief sustainability officer. We're checking to see if Keurig Dr. Pepper named a new CSO.
  • Fox Corp. has hired Adam Ciongoli as chief legal and policy officer. Ciongoli previously was EVP, general counsel and CSO at Campbell Soup Company. We're checking to see if Campbell named a new CSO.

2. Higher Education: Duke University has formed an Office of Climate and Sustainability. The office spans Duke Forest, the Campus Farm, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Sustainable Duke and the Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainability. Toddi Steelman, VP and vice provost for climate and sustainability, leads the office.

3. Partnership - Hospitality Services: Regent Taipei and EarthCheck have partnered to focus on sustainability in Taiwan's luxury hotel sector.

4. Partnership - Aviation: Flexport.org and CHOOOSE gave partnered to offer a joint solution that will "enable Flexport customers to reduce lifecycle emissions through supporting sustainable aviation fuel (SAF)."  Flexport develops a global logistics platform. CHOOOSE develops a SaaS platform that allows businesses to integrate climate action into customer experiences. 

5. Partnership - Aviation: Tata Communications has joined Lufthansa Group‘s Corporate SAF program with a bulk purchase of SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) for its corporate travel needs.

6. Carbon Offsets: South Pole, which positions itself as the world’s top seller of carbon offsets, said its CEO is stepping down following months of allegations that the company overstated the climate impact of products that it sold, Bloomberg reported.

7. Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging - Executive Leadership: Charge Enterprises -- an electrical, broadband and EV charging infrastructure company -- has named Matthew Chee as senior VP of growth. Chee reports to interim CO Craig Denson. Chee previously was VP of mergers and acquisitions, and he retains those M&A responsibilities.

B. Sustainability M&A, Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. M&A - Environmental Software: Seacloud, backed by private equity firm Bluefront Equity, has acquired the environmental monitoring products and software suite of Meox.

2. M&A - Electric Battery (EV) Technology: Swedish truckmaker Volvo won an auction for the battery business of troubled Proterra in the United States with a $210 million bid, Reuters reported.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. Puerto Rico - Electric Grid: IT service provider Parsons is included in contract for the Puerto Rico Power System Stabilization Project by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Savannah District. The $5 billion ceiling value contract includes a "base performance period of five years and represents new work" for Parsons -- which also has an energy business unit.

2. China: A surge in clean power generation will reduce carbon emissions in China by 2024 and could put the world’s biggest polluter on a path to sustained declines, Bloomberg reported. The findings are based on a Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air report.

3. European Union and Financial Services: Financial firms may be excluded from Europe’s most consequential ESG regulation, as the industry looks set to win a reprieve after an intense lobbying campaign, Bloomberg reported.

4. European Union and COP28: The European Union will make a "substantial" financial contribution to a new international fund addressing the destruction caused by climate change, the EU's executive commission said, Reuters reported.
