BNP Paribas CIB has promoted Eric Tran to chief sustainability officer for Global Banking APAC. He previously was head of sustainability for transaction banking APAC. Here are four things to know about BNP Paribas and Tran's executive experience.

1. Business Scope and Scale: BNP Paribas Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) is the global investment banking arm of BNP Paribas, a French multinational bank. Wikipedia notes.

Acording to the company, CIB (Corporate and Institutional Banking) has nearly 40,000 employees in 53 countries. CIB serves two types of clients – corporates and financial institutions (banks, insurance companies, asset managers, etc.). The company's services span capital markets, securities services, financing, risk management, cash management and financial advice, CIB says.

2. Sustainability Goals: BNP Paribas expects to achieve 80% low-carbon financing for the Group’s energy production by 2028 -- two years earlier than originally expected. As of 2025, the target for 2030 is now 90%.

Moreover, the group is aligning its portfolios with trajectories compatible with collective carbon neutrality by 2050, BNP Paribas asserts. Deeper details are in the BNP Paribas 2023 Climate Report.

3. Executive Experience: Eric Tran, now chief sustainability officer for global banking APAC at BNP Paribas CIB, has extensive sustainability experience. His earlier roles at the company, according to his LinkedIn account, include:

Before joining BNP Paribas in 2017, Tran held key posts at Cathay Pacific Airways, and various financial services and IT consulting companies.

4. Chief Sustainability Officers: Why Technology Partners Should Care

By 2027, 25% of Global 2000 companies will have assigned a chief sustainability officer (CSO) responsible for meeting their organization’s ESG goals and making ESG-related IT purchasing decisions, according to IDC.

The bottom line: Technology partners need to extend their sales, marketing, engagement and support strategies to successfully fulfill those CSO customer needs, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.
