Chilean Cobalt Hires Nike Circularity Veteran Andy Sloop as Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO): 4 Things to Know

February 4, 2025 by Joe Panettieri

Chilean Cobalt Corp. has hired Nike veteran Andy Sloop as chief sustainability officer (CSO), the mineral exploration and development company said. Here are four things to know about Chilean Cobalt's sustainability strategy, and Sloop's executive experience.

1. Business Focus: Chilean Cobalt, founded in 2017, has offices in Miami, Florida, and  Santiago, Chile. The company focuses on the La Cobaltera copper-cobalt project in Chile's San Juan cobalt district.

2. Sustainability Strategy: On the sustainability front, Chilean Cobalt utilizes the IRMA (Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance) Principles to guide its work. Still, we don't know if the has a net zero sustainability strategy.

In 2023, the company formed an ESG Committee to establish a draft Sustainability Framework. Once finalized and adopted, the framework will "govern development of systems to be able to track, quantify, and qualify environmental, social, and governance-related metrics, as well as compare with other peers in the junior/developer mining space," the company said in February 2024.

3. CSO Role: In this newly-created role, Sloop joins the Chilean Cobalt leadership team, responsible for "driving sustainability strategies and systems that support Chilean Cobalt's mission to responsibly supply cobalt and other critical minerals for a sustainable future," the company said. He will also work closely with the CEO on investor and media engagement and continue serving on the company's board, acording to the executive announcement.

4. Previous Experience: Sloop has extensive experience with the Chilean Cobalt team. He has served as an Independent Director, ESG Committee Chair, and Audit Committee Member at Chilean Cobalt since October 2021.

Elsewhere, Sloop served as global director of Zero Waste & Circularity at Nike from 2016 to 2024. In that role, he "drove strategic improvements in Nike's manufacturing supply chain sustainability practices," Chilean Cobalt said.

Chief Sustainability Officers: Why Technology Partners Should Care

By 2027, 25% of Global 2000 companies will have assigned a chief sustainability officer (CSO) responsible for meeting their organization’s ESG goals and making ESG-related IT purchasing decisions, according to IDC.

The bottom line: Technology partners need to extend their sales, marketing, engagement and support strategies to successfully fulfill those CSO customer needs, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.
