Sustainable Technology News 20 September 2024: BubblyNet, Context Labs, LiquidStack Funding, More

Here is today’s sustainable IT services news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable Technology, Talent, Partnerships and Green IT Alliances

1. Research - IT Operations and Carbon Accounting: Fully 99% of executives are unable to quantify their IT operations' exact carbon footprint, but generative AI can help, IBM research asserts.

2. Launch: Securitas Technology plans to promote environmentally sustainable solutions in the electronic security industry.

3. Data Centers - Decarbonization Services: Context Labs has expanded its Decarbonization-as-a-Service (DaaS) offering for data centers. The service includes verified data to improve carbon management and emissions transparency, third-party verification, guidance to identify additional carbon reduction opportunities; and more.

4. Building Energy Management: Johnson Controls has launched Metasys 14.0 -- a key update to the company's Building Automation System platform.

5. Smart Buildings: BubblyNet, a software company in Clearwater, Florida, is pitching IoT technology and smart building automation to help improve building energy management and sustainability.

6. Manufacturing: Siemens has implemented several sustainability initiatives across its U.S. manufacturing facilities to "cut emissions, go electric and transition to a green domestic supply chain," the company said.

7. Executive Leadership - Clean Energy Organization: The Cleantech Leaders Roundtable (CTLR) has named Ann Davlin as CEO. CTLR is a membership-based organization in the clean energy sector.

8. Executive Leadership - EV Charging Technology: EVgo will hire Paul Dobson as CFO, effective October 1, 2024. EVgo has navigated multiple c-level executive changes in 2024, and a CEO change in 2023.

9. Executive Leadership - Software: Stem CEO John Carrington has stepped down. The developer of clean energy software and services has named Executive Chair David Buzby as interim CEO, and the board is seeking a permanent CEO to run the business.

10. Leadership - IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) Services: CyberCrunch has hired Joe Corcoran as VP of sales. CyberCrunch, headquartered in Pennsylvania, specializes in data destruction and the environmentally responsible disposition of IT assets. T

11. Leadership - ITAD: Illumynt founder Paul Knight has returned as CEO of the ITAD service provider, E-Scrap News reported.

12. Lawsuit - Greenwashing: An environmental group is suing Tyson Foods for allegedly misleading consumers by saying it will reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and marketing climate-friendly beef without meaningful plans to achieve those goals, Reuters reported.

13. Solar Relationship Ends: Sunrun is winding down its sales lead generation program with Costco, the solar company disclosed.

14. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF): The San Francisco 49ers are the first NFL team to purchase sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The purchase involves game-related flying on United airlines from San Francisco to Los Angeles in late September 2024.

B. Sustainability M&A, Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Funding - Liquid Cooling and Data Centers: LiquidStack has received a $20 million Series B extension investment from Tiger Global, bringing LiquidStack’s total Series B funding round to $35 million. LiquidStack did not disclose valuation terms.

2. Funding - Startup: AIR COMPANY, a carbon conversion technology company, has raised $69 million in Series B funding.

3. M&A - Solar Energy: Complete Solar is the winning bidder for various SunPower assets.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. United States - Climate Tech Spending:  Former President Donald Trump plans to cancel all unspent funds from President Joe Biden's signature climate law if Trump wins the presidential election on November 5, Reuters reported. But the vast majority of climate tech grants will be spent by the time a new U.S. president takes office in January 2025, Reuters noted, and targeting what remains would be a massive legal challenge, according to Biden administration officials.
