Sustainability News 27 March 2024: Anthesis, Honeywell, IBM, KPMG, SAP, More

A. Sustainable Technology, Talent, Partnerships and Green IT Alliances

1. Software - Carbon Emissions Management: Azito’s largest power plant in the Ivory Coast will deploy GE Vernova’s carbon emissions management software, known as CERius, to boost accuracy of reporting, the companies said.

2. Hardware - Carbon Neutral Printing: HP is pitching its managed printing services as a key component for carbon neutral printing...

3. AWS and Wind Farms: By performing large scale simulations on HPC clusters in the cloud, built using  Amazon EC2 P4d instances and powered by Nvidia A100 GPUs, customers can "get a better understanding of how wind energy affects our atmosphere and the environment as a whole," according to AWS and Whiffle.

4. AWS and Data Management: AWS has released Data Analytics Lens, a "collection of customer-proven design principles, best practices, and prescriptive guidance to help you adopt a cloud-centered approach to running analytics on AWS." The lens includes a focus on sustainability. Key topics include benchmarking, trading data accuracy for carbon, encouraging a data minimization culture, implementing data retention processes, optimizing data modeling, preventing unnecessary data movement, and efficiently managing analytics infrastructure, AWS said.

5. Partnership - EV Charging Network: Ford and Allego are partnering to bring ultra-fast charging infrastructure to hundreds of Ford dealerships across Europe, the two companies said.

6. Partnership - Software and IT Consulting: KPMG's growing relationship with SAP involves embedding sustainability data into core customers' business processes, the companies said.

7. Climate Change's Impact on Insurance and Financial Services: IBM describes the risks and potential solutions here.

8. Conference - Tech Recycling: TERRA (The Electronics Reuse & Recycling Alliance) plans to host an inaugural TERRA Conference in Spring 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee. Stay tuned for more details.

B. Sustainability M&A, Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. Investments - Bill Gates and Green Steel: Bill Gates-backed startup Electra can now make emissions-free iron without melting ore on commercial-sized prototypes, Bloomberg reported. That’s a major milestone for a technology that’s only a few years old and promised a step-change in the race to produce steel without a massive carbon footprint, the report said.

2. M&A - Energy Transition: EIPGRID has acquired Mirae & Hwangyung. The deal focuses on Virtual Power Plant and Energy-as-a-Service opportunities. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

3. M&A - Consulting: Anthesis has acquired Given, a sustainability consultancy in London.

4. M&A: Honeywell is acquiring Civitanavi Systems for €200 million in cash. The acquisition will help customers create autonomous operations in aircraft and other vehicles, Honeywell said. The deal is expected to close in Q3 of 2024, the buyer said.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. United States - Solar Panel Government Incentives:  Two small solar manufacturers are joining forces to make panels that will enable their customers, U.S. solar project developers, to collect on a lucrative new federal subsidy for American-made clean energy equipment, Reuters reported. The agreement between Georgia-based solar cell producer Suniva and Canada's Heliene, which has panel-making operations in Minnesota, is being touted by the Biden administration as evidence that Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) subsidies are succeeding in building a domestic solar manufacturing industry to compete with China, Reuters said.

2. United Kingdom - AI and Data Center Power Consumption: Electricity demand from UK data centers will jump sixfold over the next 10 years as a boom in artificial intelligence requires increased computing power, according to the head of National Grid Plc, as reported by Bloomberg.

3. United Sates - Wind Power: The Biden administration gave final approval to Orsted and Eversource's Sunrise Wind offshore wind facility, which is expected to provide power to more than 320,000 homes in New York, Reuters reported.
