Aerospace equipment manufacturer Safran has hired Air-France-KLM veteran Nathalie Stubler (pictured above) as chief sustainability officer (CSO) and a member of the group's executive committee. Stubler's first day at Safran is set for September 18, 2023. This is a newly created position at company.
Here are four things to know about Nathalie Stubler and Safran's sustainability strategy.
1. Business Scope and Scale: Safran, based in Paris, France, specializes in the aviation (proposition, equipment and interiors), defense and space markets. The company designs, develops and manufactures aircraft engines, rocket engines and defense equipment.
Safram formed in 2005 when SNECMA and SAGEM merged. The Zodiac Aerospace acquisition, in 2018, further expanded the company's aeronautical expertise. As of 2020, Safram had 81,000 employees.
2. Net-Zero Strategy and Commitments: Safran’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets have been independently approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The goals include reducing:
- Absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 50.4% by 2030 from a 2018 base year.
- Scope 3 GHG emissions from the use of sold products (i.e., from propulsion) 42.5% per available seat kilometer by 2035 from a 2018 base year.
- Indirect use-phase emissions (ie associated with equipments and interiors) 42.5% per available seat kilometer within the same timeframe.
3. Nathalie Stubler's Role at Safran: Stubler's mission is to manage and deploy sustainability initiatives (sustainable development in its social, societal and environmental aspects) throughout the activities, sites, products & services, and operating methods of Safran, the company said. She will ensure responsible practices and compliance with regulatory obligations on all sustainable development issues and lead the Group's discussions on the topic with internal and external stakeholders.
4. Nathalie Stubler's Experience: According to Safran, "Nathalie started her career in Air Inter in 1992 as an engineer in the Network and Strategy Department. From 1997 she held various positions in Air France Network Department, then in the commercial organization. She was Corporate Social Responsability VP for Air France between 2007 and 2009, then took the position of Air France Revenue management and Pricing SVP in 2010. Appointed to the Executive Committee of Air France in 2013, she became SVP Network Strategy for Air France KLM group the same year. After being Chief of Staff for the Group CEO between 2014 and 2015, she was Transavia France CEO between 2016 and 2023. From January 2023 she was special advisor to the Group CEO on the decarbonization strategy of AirFrance KLM."
