Sustainable IT Services News for Channel Partners and MSPs: 24 September 2025

Here is today's sustainable IT services news, research and analysis for channel partners, MSPs, climate accounting professionals, and the chief sustainability officers (CSOs) they serve.

A. Sustainable IT Partnerships, Strategic Alliances and Strategies

1. IT Infrastructure: Nvidia described AI's role in the sustainable energy transition during Climate Week NYC. Related: Nvidia sustainability strategy and channel partner implications.

2. Executive Leadership: Consulting firm Carbon Trust has named Richard Rugg as deputy CEO, reporting to CEO Michael Rea. Rugg will "focus on ensuring the Carbon Trust continues to deliver tangible impact for and with our clients and partners," the company said.

3. Executive Leadership - Sustainable Building Technologies: Johnson Controls named data center expert Todd Grabowski as VP and president, Americas, effective Oct. 1, 2025. Grabowski will report to CEO Joakim Weidemanis. He succeeds Nate Manning, who will depart Johnson Controls at the end of 2025 to pursue other opportunities.

4. Supply Chain Decarbonization: Schneider Electric has expanded its global supply chain decarbonization programs with an expanded suite of educational resources, regional market intelligence, and collaborative procurement pathways, the company said.

5. Green Data Centers - Financial Strategies: General Atlantic and Systemiq have published Investable Green Data Centres: Where Sustainability Drives Performance. The whitepaper "outlines scenarios for the deployment of existing and emerging climate solutions where targeted investment can unlock growth for data centers in the future," the organizations said.

6. Data Centers - Net Zero Strategies: A Ramboll report describes how organizations can build sustainable data centers while reducing or eliminating the negative impacts related to carbon emissions, water, biodiversity, and material use.

7. Data Centers - Research Group: The University of Texas at Austin has launched COMPASS -- a research consortium to help identify options for sustainable data center growth strategies. In addition to its industrial members, COMPASS is engaging with communities near data centers and large-load projects to "help local leaders and residents understand the trade-offs around power, water, land, and jobs."

8. Data Centers - Water Reuse: Gneuton, a startup, unveiled sustainable water purification technology for AI data centers. The technology "turns data centers into carbon-neutral sources of fresh water, promoting sustainability on a massive scale," Gneuton said.

9. Data Centers - Water Technology Partnership:  VVater and Introl are partnering to deliver a "new class of sustainable, AI-ready data centers, designed to meet unprecedented GPU demand without compromising the planet's most critical resource: water," the companies said.

10. AI and Power Demand Forecasts: Amperon Holdings, leveraging AI and machine learning, is offering hourly projections of US power demand seven months into the future, Bloomberg reported.

11. Environmental Forecasting - HPE Supercomputer: Earth Sciences New Zealand (formally NIWA) of Aotearoa (New Zealand) selected HPE Cray XD2000, purpose-built for AI and simulation workloads, to accelerate the organization’s environmental science and precision of meteorological forecasting, Hewlett Packard Enterprise said.

12. Partnerships - EV Charging Networks: WEX expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging network through new partnerships with charge point operators (CPOs), Lynkwell and Revel, and a payments integration with the smart charging platform Ampcontrol. The partnerships "enable hundreds of new charging stations across the U.S. to accept payments from WEX users and provide WEX customers with access to an extensive EV charging network," the company said.

13. Open Source Infrastructure - Financial Challenges: An open letter from multiple stewards of public open source infrastructure described how "Commercial-scale use without commercial-scale support is unsustainable." In a related note, Sonatype CTO and co-founder Brian Fox wrote: "Open source infrastructure has been propped up for decades by a mix of goodwill, silent benefactors, and organizations willing to shoulder costs that benefit everyone else. That generosity has carried us a long way. But billion-dollar ecosystems cannot stand forever on foundations built of goodwill and unpaid weekends." As a result, he asserted, "It's time to align responsibility with usage."

14. Research - Scope 3 Liabilities: Ignoring supply chain emissions (Scope 3) could cost companies over $500 billion in annual liabilities globally by 2030, according to the 2025 Carbon Action Report from EcoVadis and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). 15. OpenAI Data Centers: OpenAI's flagship AI data center in Texas will be joined by five others around the U.S. as the ChatGPT maker aims to make good on the $500 billion infrastructure investment promoted by President Donald Trump in early 2025, the Associated Press reported. Stargate, a joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle and Softbank, said it is building two more data center complexes in Texas, one in New Mexico, one in Ohio and another in a Midwest location it hasn't yet disclosed, the report said.

B. Sustainable IT Investments, Funding, Earnings and Business Launches

1. Accelerator - Angels Climate Tech Africa: Acumen, in collaboration with EY and ServiceNow, has launched Angels Climate Tech Africa. The accelerator is "designed to unleash the potential of founders in Africa who are tackling the climate crisis." Related: See more than 90 sustainability accelerators listed here.

2. Investment - IT Asset Disposition (ITAD): Stellus Capital Management provided senior debt financing and an equity co-investment in support of Tailwind Capital's investment in ITAD solutions provider DMD Systems Recovery. 3. Investment - Low Carbon Cement Production: Microsoft has invested in green cement manufacturer Fortera. Amid the investment, Microsoft gains procurement rights for Fortera's low-carbon cement. Related: Microsoft sustainability strategy and channel partner implications.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies, Regulations and News

1. United States: President Donald Trump used his address to world leaders at the United Nations to denounce climate change and green energy, making a series of misleading claims in a rambling speech that went on for nearly an hour, Bloomberg reported.

2. COP 30 - Carbon Markets: Brazil is trying to build a coalition of countries, including the European Union and China, to unify carbon markets globally as it prepares to host the COP30 climate summit, Bloomberg reported. Related: COP30 climate event news.
