Sustainable IT and Climate Tech News 26 February 2025: Workiva Carbon Software Sales; ERI RecycleNation; More

Here is today’s sustainable IT services and climate tech news, research and analysis -- written for technology partners, green IT service providers, CIOs, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and climate accounting professionals.

A. Sustainable IT, Talent, Partnerships and Green Tech Alliances

1. Earnings - ESG Software: Workiva's revenue was $200 million in Q4 of 2024, up 20% compared to Q4 of 2023. Workiva develops SaaS software that integrates financial reporting, sustainability management, and governance, risk, and compliance (GRC). Amid shifting political winds in the United States, the Workiva earnings announcement did not mention the company's Carbon Accounting software -- which is based on the $100 million Sustain.Life acquisition of 2024. However, company executives praised Workiva Carbon's momentum during an earnings call on February 25, 2025. We'll share more details later.

2. Partner Program - Software Developers and Energy Efficient Processors: Efficient Computer, a promoter of energy-efficient processors, has launched an online playground for software developers. The Compiler Playground "enables developers to experiment and innovate, concretely showcasing Efficient's energy efficiency advantage in an environment representative of the real developer experience," the company said.

3. Partnership - IT Asset Management (ITAM): SysAid and Lansweeper are integrating their IT Asset Management (ITAM) and IT Service Management (ITSM) software. The result: Customers and partners can "seamlessly manage IT services and assets from a single system." In theory, the integration could also help customers and partners to improve IT asset disposition (ITAD) while reducing e-waste.

4. Net Zero Banking Alliance - Reduced Requirements?: The Net-Zero Banking Alliance may abandon a member requirement that involves aligning portfolios with a goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C, Bloomberg reported.

5. IKEA Scales Back Climate Goal: IKEA parent INGKA Group has adjusted one of its climate goals, replacing its target to reach 100% emission-free home deliveries by 2025, with a new ambition to achieve more than 90% of home deliveries made by zero-emissions vehicles by 2028, ESG Today reported. Multiple factors influenced INGKA's decision, including a rapid increase in online orders, and the availability of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

6. Recycle Search Tool: Keep an eye on RecycleNation.com, an online search engine tool that allows users to find find the closest U.S. location to responsibly recycle anything. The site serves more than 300,000 unique visitors per month. ERI, the major IT asset disposition (ITAD) provider, owns RecycleNation.

7. ESG Ratings Service: Diginex has launched an ESG Ratings Support Service. The service is designed to "help businesses secure an ESG score across key rating agencies, including CDP, EcoVadis, Sustainable Fitch, S&P and Sustainalytics. The effort can help customers to "optimize their ESG ratings, attract investment, and strengthen stakeholder trust," Diginex asserted.

8. Top Energy Transition Innovators: Darcy Partners, a provider of technology-focused market intelligence to the energy sector, has unveiled a list of 2024 innovators driving the energy transition.

9. Generative AI and Environmental Considerations: A new Capgemini Research Institute report provides a roadmap for developing sustainable Gen AI practices.

10. Electric Vehicles (EVs) - CEO Change: Lucid Group CEO Peter Rawlinson is stepping down. Marc Winterhoff, chief operating officer, has been appointed Interim CEO. Rawlinson will shift to strategic technical advisor to the chairman of the board. The surprise CEO move arrived amid plans to double EV production in 2025.

B. Sustainability M&A, Climate Tech Investments, Funding and Green IT Business Launches

1. M&A - Energy Transition Consulting: Egis has acquired Peracon, a consulting engineering firm focused on the energy sector and sustainability. Peracon has more than 100 employees across Australia, the buyer said. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

2. Startup Funding - Built Environment Software: Kvist Solutions, a software startup in Norway that assists sustainable building projects, has raised €1.3 million (US$1.36 million), Yahoo Finance and Global Data reported.

3. Funding - Quantum Computing: Quantum Machines, an Israeli quantum computing startup, raised $170 million in a Series C round, bringing total funding to date to $280 million, The Wall Street Journal reported. The funding surfaced one week after Microsoft announced its Majorana 1 quantum chip; and roughly two months after Google unveiled the Willow chip development. Major cloud service providers and IT infrastructure companies believe quantum computing may help to solve complex medical, health care, chemistry and climate challenges.

C. Regional and Global Sustainability Policies and News

1. COP30 - Hotel and Infrastructure Challenges: Countries should reconsider the size of their COP30 delegations and exercise “good judgment” to avoid a rush for COP30 accommodations, according to The special secretary for COP30, Valter Correia da Silva, Valor International reported.
