Boeing Names Sustainability and Future Mobility Organization Leader: 3 Things to Know

May 1, 2023 by Joe Panettieri

Boeing has named Jim Hileman (pictured above) as VP of the aerospace giant's Sustainability & Future Mobility organization (S&FM). That's not to be confused with Boeing Chief Sustainability Officer Christopher Raymond.

Here are three things to know about the news:

1. Jim Hileman's Responsibilities and Peers: Hileman leads a team that "ensures the company’s technical expertise and market leadership in sustainability technologies, as well as emerging, advanced aerial mobility applications," the company said. He reports to CTO Todd Citron, while also working closely with Chief Sustainability Officer Christopher Raymond.

2. Focus Areas: Boeing said Hileman will "lead and integrate efforts to develop innovations in electrification, energy sources, and aircraft design." That includes leadership of Cascade, a data modeling tool to show the most effective scenarios for reaching net zero by 2050, and in electrification, energy storage, aircraft design, operational efficiency and autonomy, Boeing said.

3. Strategic Partnerships: Hileman, Boeing added, will also oversee the teams supporting joint ventures with Wisk Aero, which produces an electric, self-flying air taxi, and SkyGrid, which is developing tools to manage airspace integration and to deliver operational functions.

Meanwhile, critics are calling on the aviation industry to accelerate their net zero efforts. Among the areas of concern: The International Council on Clean Transportation predicts the aviation industry will fall far short of its pledge to generate net zero carbon emissions by 2050, according to The Wall Street Journal.

4. Bonus - Why Technology Partners Should Care: By 2027, 25% of Global 2000 companies will have assigned a chief sustainability officer (CSO) responsible for meeting their organization’s ESG goals and making ESG-related IT purchasing decisions, according to IDC. Technology partners need to extend their sales, marketing, engagement and support strategies to fulfill those CSOs needs, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.
