Here are four things to know about Stroll's experience and UC San Francisco's sustainability strategy.
1. University Background: The University of California (UC) San Francisco, founded as Toland Medical College in 1864, focuses on health science and life science. The university serves roughly 6,000 students, residents and post doctorate professionals.
2. Sustainability Targets: The UCSF sustainability strategy includes sustainable procurement guidelines, green building design, and 100% clean energy by 2025. The university expects to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025 from Scope 1 and 2 through aggressive reductions and the purchase of carbon offsets.
3. Experience and Focus: Stoll previously was chief sustainability and carbon solutions officer at the University of California, Berkeley. She joined that university in 2001, and earned multiple promotions from transportation planning to manager and director posts before becoming CSO in 2020.
At UCSF, Stoll will "focus on reducing on-site energy carbon emissions cost effectively, increasing the use of clean energy, saving water, meeting zero waste policy targets, purchasing sustainable foods and products, reducing travel, commute, and waste-associated emissions, and developing greener labs and buildings," a UCSF statement said.
Moreover, Stoll will provide "technical expertise and strategic planning leadership in the areas of new construction and renovations, renewable energy systems design, energy/water efficiency, and sustainable facilities management," the university said.
Stoll reports to Jon Giacomi, associate vice chancellor of Campus Life Services.
4. Leadership Perspectives: In a prepared statement, Erin Gore, senior vice chancellor of finance and administration, said: “After an extensive search, we are delighted that Kira Stoll will lead UCSF’s ongoing efforts in sustainability and help us to reduce our environmental footprint. Advancing health worldwide begins here at home to ensure we combat climate change, which is a serious public health problem.”
Added Jon Giacomi, associate vice chancellor of Campus Life Services: “With Kira’s know-how and passion for sustainability, we are confident that UCSF will continue to make significant strides in our commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. We look forward to Kira’s leadership and vision in advancing initiatives and our distinction in sustainability across the campus and beyond.”
Stroll concluded: “Creating a more sustainable and resilient campus includes commitment to equitable outcomes for people. It’s great how engaged the community is and I’m ready to collaborate on inclusive processes that lead to comprehensive environmental improvements. UC is an amazing institution and the opportunity to work on a health care campus is particularly exciting to me. I have a passion for making decarbonization projects happen that improve environmental health, and women’s health is close to my heart.”
Chief Sustainability Officers: Why Technology Partners Should Care
By 2027, 25% of Global 2000 companies will have assigned a chief sustainability officer (CSO) responsible for meeting their organization’s ESG goals and making ESG-related IT purchasing decisions, according to IDC.
The bottom line: Technology partners need to extend their sales, marketing, engagement and support strategies to successfully fulfill those CSO customer needs, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.
