Northwestern Medicine Chief Sustainability Executive Jeff Good: 4 Things to Know

Northwestern Medicine has named Jeff Good as the organization's first chief sustainability executive. Here are four things to know about Good's experience and the organization's sustainability strategies.

1. Organization Scope and Scale: Northwestern Medicine, based in Chicago, Illinois, is a collaboration between Northwestern Memorial HealthCare and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. It encompasses the research, teaching, and patient care activities of the academic medical center. Those organizations represent 30,000 among clinical and administrative staff, medical and science faculty and medical students. Moreover, the organizations span 100 locations throughout the region.

2. Sustainability Strategy: We have not seen specific sustainability goals from the organization. However, the member organizations have specific goals and metrics in place. For instance, Northwestern University's Strategic Sustainability Plan, released in 2017, addresses these five program areas:

• Built environment
• transportation
• resource conservation
• communications and engagement
• experiantal learning

3. Jeff Good's Career: Good joined Northwestern Medical Group in 2008 as director of budget and planning. Nearly a decade later, he emerged as VP of operations and surgical services at Northwestern Medicine in 2016. Additional roles since that time include VP of security and emergency management (2018-2021), president of Palos Hospital (2021-2023) and now chief sustainability executive (September 2023-forward).

Executive Perspectives: In a statement about Good's new role, Northwestern Medicine President and CEO Howard Chrisman wrote on LinkedIn: "For years, Northwestern Medicine has been mindful of conserving energy, reducing our carbon footprint and eliminating unnecessary waste. It’s time to do more. That’s why I have named Jeff Good as our first Chief Sustainability Executive.
