FinTech Startup Ekko Hires Majda Dabaghi as Chief Sustainability Officer: 3 Things to Know

October 22, 2024 by Joe Panettieri

Ekko, a FinTech startup, has hired SME Climate Hub co-founder Majda Dabaghi as chief sustainability officer (CSO).

Here are three things to know about Ekko's business focus and sustainability strategy, and Dabaghi’s career experience.

1. Business Focus, Scope and Scale: Ekko, founded in 2019, is based in London, United Kingdom. Ekko offers integrated sustainability solutions through an API (application programming interface). That API enables carbon tracking and carbon compensation among a wider product set, the company asserts.

Among the example use cases: Ekko's software allows banking customers to see the climate impact of their transactions. Similarly, the company's e-commerce software allows shoppers "give back at checkout in support of the causes they care about," the company said.

Ekko in May 2024 raised $2.5 million in early stage funding, led by Fuel Ventures. We don't know if Ekko has set and/or achieved its own net-zero goals.

2. Executive Experience: Majda Dabaghi previously was an Ekko advisory board member. She also remains an advisory board member at B Lab and Manafest Climate, according to her LinkedIn bio. Earlier in Dabaghi's career, she was an international renewable energy lawyer.

3. Another Hire, and Key Perspectives: Ekko also named financial services veteran Anthony Thompson to the company's board of directors.

In a prepared statement, Ekko CEO Oli Cook said: “ekko is at a pivotal stage where strategic scaling, market expansion, and innovation are crucial to our ongoing growth and impact. By bringing Anthony and Majda on board, we underscore our commitment to becoming the leading environment-focused fintech in the ecosystem. Their extensive experience and deep understanding of the intersection between fintech and sustainability uniquely position us to provide the essential tools and knowledge for financial institutions and consumers to have a real impact on the climate and biodiversity.”

Added Dabaghi: “It’s fantastic to join the extraordinary ekko team and support our mission to make fintech a force for good. I want to help the company achieve its goal of educating consumers on the environmental impact of their transactions and empowering them to contribute to credible environmental projects around the world that will address the climate and nature emergency. I share ekko’s values of operating with the highest possible environmental integrity and the belief that small actions can add up have a huge positive ripple effect and “ekko” across the world. I am looking forward to working with the ekko team, our clients and partners to ensure exponential positive impact.”

Chief Sustainability Officers: Why Technology Partners Should Care

By 2027, 25% of Global 2000 companies will have assigned a chief sustainability officer (CSO) responsible for meeting their organization’s ESG goals and making ESG-related IT purchasing decisions, according to IDC.

The bottom line: Technology partners need to extend their sales, marketing, engagement and support strategies to successfully fulfill those CSO customer needs, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.
