Supply Chain and Logistics Firm Unipart Names Andy Pyne as Chief Sustainability Officer: 4 Things to Know

October 12, 2024 by Joe Panettieri

Unipart, a supply chain solutions provider and logistics consultancy, has promoted Andy Pyne to chief sustainability officer (CSO). Here are four things to know about Unipart's business and sustainability strategy, and Pyne's expertise.

1. Business Scope and Scale: Unipart, founded in 1974, is based in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. The company, backed by roughly 12,000 employees, specializes in logistics, supply chain optimization, manufacturing and consultancy services. Unipart offers supply chain solutions across seven sectors:

  1. Automotive, rail and public transportation;
  2. technology;
  3. healthcare;
  4. aerospace and defense;
  5. e-commerce;
  6. consumer and retail; and
  7. the industrial sector.

2. Sustainability Goals and Milestones: Unipart is striving to become net zero by 2040. As part of that sustainability journey, the company wants to cut Scope 1 and 2 emissions by at least 90% by 2030. In terms of Scope 3, Unipart expects 75% of its suppliers, covering purchased goods and services, and upstream transportation and distribution, will have science-based targets by 2027. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validated those targets in 2023.

3. Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) Experience: Andy Pyne, promoted to CSO in September 2024, worked for Unipart in 1991 through 1995, and then rejoined the company in 1998 as a general manager of North American operations, according to his LinkedIn bio. His Unipart experience includes several logistics-focused leadership roles, the company said. Most recently, Pyne held a senior operations director role alongside a sustainability focus.

4. Executive Perspectives: In a prepared statement, Unipart CEO Darren Leigh said: ā€œUnipart has made a commitment to be net zero by 2040 which will require increased leadership and focus, therefore Iā€™m delighted to appoint Andy Pyne as full-time Chief Sustainability Officer. Andy will work across all areas of Unipart delivering synergies, economies of scale and efficiencies. Andy is passionate about the business and Unipartā€™s people, and creating a culture where everyone can give their best, serving our customers better than anyone else and committing to the safety and wellbeing of all colleagues and protection of the planet for them and all Unipartā€™s stakeholders.ā€

Darren Leigh, CEO, Unipart

Added Pyne: ā€œSustainability is deeply embedded in our culture at Unipart, driving long-term growth for employees, customers, suppliers and local communities. We have made a significant commitment in setting an ambitious net zero target with colleagues at every level working with a carbon conscious mindset.ā€

Chief Sustainability Officers: Why Technology Partners Should Care

By 2027, 25% of Global 2000 companies will have assigned a chief sustainability officer (CSO) responsible for meeting their organizationā€™s ESG goals and making ESG-related IT purchasing decisions, according to IDC.

The bottom line: Technology partners need to extend their sales, marketing, engagement and support strategies to successfully fulfill those CSO customer needs, Sustainable Tech Partner believes.
